I’ve taken a lot of photos of latte art - the patterns and designs made by pouring properly steamed milk into espresso - but never gotten around to taking video of how its done. I shot this small video today in the kitchen with my barista sidekick Kyle wielding the pitcher (making it look easy as he always does).
For those with the right gear who want some pointers on getting good milk texture CoffeeGeek’s Milk Frothing Guide is the best place to start.
You have a GS3 in your kitchen?
You are a lucky man!
That’s pretty skillful
Here is the big one now, when are we going to get a post on machines and the best ones for your buck. Or even better, the way to make the perfect espresso.
That’s simply gorgeous.
I thought I was pretty talented being able to write my name in the snow…
pshaw! i can TOTALLY do that. :P
while some may disagree …that is not only a craft, but a true piece of art. thanks for sharing your expertise this week!
Wow, he does make it look easy. It’s so deceptive, as that is really difficult to do even if you have a god-shot of espresso and perfectly foamed whole milk. So much is the in pour technique.
My big issue is, even though I get micro-foam, it’s always topped with a few big bubbles. Not only that, the pitcher I have has too minimal a spout so I don’t get a proper stream.

That is just fantastic. /me goes back to watch it a few more times
Your kitchen or Kyle’s kitchen? That is one sweet espresso machine. I’m doing okay, but that’s a serious Cadillac. Now the envy has really set in.
Spiney - its in the kitchen of our company “flop-house” here in L.A.. Its sort of our lab machine for crazy experimentation.
Microfoam is the key and the hardest part to achieve properly. Everything else is simple.
Good latte art is NOT an indicator of good espresso by the way. I’d much rather have crappy swirls on a good espresso than the other way around.
Nice job there, Tonx. Jim asked for some pointers on making perfect espresso. If I may share, I have posted my thoughts on that very subject at my website EspressoCoffeeSnobs.com - How to make perfect espresso. Perhaps your readers might find something helpful there. It’s aimed at helping out the serious home-based amateur.
