Some online ad campaigns are really engaging—others are just plain annoying.

I have to give Taco Bell kudos on this one. You just cannot go wrong with trying to fulfill every guy’s fantasy of being a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit photographer. You get to pick which video of their model you’d like to watch, then snap pictures in Flash while she minces around. This is the closest most of us will ever get [Dream big, there, bucko. - Ed.] and hey, at least we can keep this pictures we take as a souvenir.

It’s like we always say before we start filling up our grocery cart with whipped cream and cucumbers: if you have to shop, you might as well shop erotic.

Dethroner: What’s the impetus behind a home shopping show for sex toys?

Miyoko: The driving force behind Shop Erotic was the desire to inspire passion in people and create a forum for everyone to enhance their intimate lives. A lot of people will not go into a sex shop, or even have one to go to. Many people are not internet savvy, and/or do not feel comfortable ordering these types of products. We have created a place where people have felt comfortable, are educated on products and how to use them, and receive them items in a discreet way. The response has been tremendous, as you can imagine! I am happy to say that Americans do desire sex, and are open-minded to getting pleasure in many different ways!

Dethroner: When did Shop Erotic first hit the airwaves?

Miyoko: Shop Erotic first aired two years ago, and at that time we showed romance products mostly! [So strap-on scorpion vibrators with attached "anal stingers" aren't romantic? Romance is dead. -Ed.]

Dethroner: You guys seem so pleasantly clinical about all of the products I’ve seen. (Which isn’t a bad thing.) Is there any product that’s just been so odd that it’s been hard to talk about on the air?

Miyoko: We try to stay extremely clinical—it’s still TV! But I think that’s part of the appeal of the show. It takes away any old stigmas that we might have learned growing up. There are some products that can be difficult to talk about. Aria’s Pleaser was a tough one to shoot. Andrea and I were laughing so hard, it took a few minutes to calm down enough to present it seriously!

Dethroner: Why the separate order phone numbers for men and women?

Miyoko: We have designated separate number for women mainly because we knew that women would not all feel comfortable talking to a man to give them their order, or ask questions. We want women to be able to speak and order freely. It also cuts back on the some of the prank calls we get from men who want someone to talk to late at night. Yep, we get those, too. Imagine that! :)

Dethroner: What’s your favorite toy of the moment?

Miyoko: My favorite toy at the moment is a glass piece that I LOVE! It’s the Erotic Popper that we featured on some shows about a year ago. My husband even brings it to surprise me on trips and vacations. Besides that, I always have to have a pocket rocket in the bedside table. It works for so many things!

The Style Diaries are a collection of eleven essays, all but two of which were written during the period in which Strauss was learning the tricks of the trade that he later recorded in The Game. Unlike The Game, however, Strauss says The Style Diaries are “less about getting the girl and more about the nature of desire itself.”

And they’re great.

I think that it’s easy to forget that Strauss has real chops as a legitimate writer in the cloud of chatter and controversy that surrounded The Game. The experiences he details in The Style Diaries are touching, squirmingly honest, and fully, murkily human. I think it’s easy to forget that the goal of self-betterment, even in the pursuit of love and sex, does not necessarily portend skeeviness. (Although it often does! I’m just saying: absolutes are always useless most of the time.)

Of course, The Style Diaries are only half of the tiny, pocket-sized package, and while great, probably not worth $25 for an hour’s worth of reading. The other half is the embarrassingly named “Stylelife Challenge,” a set of exercises designed to be done over the course of 30 days, sequentially, with the goal of landing a date before the month is over. I think it’s a great format for a self-help book and one that I had considered trying before when I was toying with the idea of doing some sort of Dethroner-brand Get Your Shit Together guide, albeit with much more convoluted sealed envelopes scheme.

I haven’t yet cracked open The Stylelife Challenges partially because I plan on writing about each day and putting it up here. (There’s a forum that Strauss’ company runs, but it’s all too monolithically branded for me. [He says on his heavily-branded website.]) But before I tuck into it, I was wondering if any of you guys would be willing to go through it at the same time so we can compare experiences, either virtually if you’re not in New York, or in meatspace if you are.

You can buy it through Amazon (as I did) by clicking the links above and I’ll get a cut, but making money isn’t my real hope here. It’s just that I have been reading and consuming and applying a lot of self-help type of stuff lately, and while I feel like it’s generally been a positive thing, I’m sort of sick of not having anyone to talk to about it.

My friend John Brownlee—if you could call a withered human corpuscle, a sort of caustic, flapping bladder striped with pipe grease useful only to scare women into your bed with taunts of “At least you’re not fucking that!” a friend—has discovered this fantastic set of scans from Glamour Photography entitled “The Great Cross-Country Girl Hunt,” aptly referring to it as “a Bang Bus for more innocent times.”

I haven’t read all the copy, but there is compelling sultriness to the photos that rides the spectrum from lurid to adorable, interspersing shots of female hitch-hikers straddling fence-posts with shots of girls “with the pixie puss.”

As the article notes, “The cocked camera is a good enough intro with any dame.”

No nudity, but plenty of bras and underwear wrapped around legitimately gorgeous mid-century cheesecake.

The problem with selling underwear to men is that most men really don’t care about their shorts. It’s not like it’s a problem to see some dude wearing underwear in an ad or anything, but most of us don’t look like underwear models, nor do we think buying the very same pair will make us into one.

But add sexy women to the mix—and not just sexy women, but naughty women—taking a long, hard draw from our piquant man panties? Success! I may not care if I have the rippling abs of a male model, but I would love for a nun to be enraptured by the smell of my jock.

The full ads themselves are right on the border of SFW-ness. If you work in Europe you’re probably fine, but if you work in one of those bullshit, uptight American offices where even a girl in a swimsuit is verboten, you’ll probably want to wait until you get home.
