When you live in the boondocks, like I now do, services that don’t work well really piss you off. I assumed that my issue in trying to buy a pay-per-view movie from DirecTV had more to do with the lousy DirecTV HD-DVR they gave me than anything else, as I was getting signal on the regular channels — but no!

I live in a coastal community and we’re kinda socked in by fog. There was no fog last night, when the pay-per-view fiasco occurred however. My wife wanted to see Sex and the City- the Movie and I figured this was a lot easier than downloading it over our excellent but limited local co-op internet service. I figured wrong.

Regular DirecTV service worked fine, but the pay-per-view, no. This morning the technician on the phone had me reboot the receiver and now we can get no service at all. Seems the heavy fog is stopping us from getting whatever base-level of data we need to allow any function. Now we’re just gonna have to wait for it to clear…

I knew heavy rain would do this but man, oh man, do I miss my evil old cable provider.

The “Mr. Show” duo of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are returning to HBO with “David’s Situation,” a new comedy pilot starring Cross.

Odenkirk and Cross co-wrote the project, which will star Cross as himself. He leaves Hollywood to move into a suburban, gated community where he has two roommates, a right-wing conservative and a liberal hippie.

From an interview Alan Sepinwall’s blog:

The Murphy Homes. He also jumped off the rail bridge at Poplar Grove, onto the rail bed. That was probably about three stories. And he hurt his ankle. It’s just true. Those jumps, by an athletic person, can actually be made and are made, routinely. By a non-athletic person? if I made it, I’d be all over the pavement and they’d pick me up with a spoon. If you made it, they’d pick you up with a spoon. When 28-year-old Donnie Andrews makes that jump because he has to, sometimes he makes it. It’s funny: I’m doing this thing now with recon Marines, “Generation Kill.” And some of them had no problem with the jump. They just started telling stories about recon training. I don’t know whether to believe them or not, but I do believe Donnie.

It was a story I actually used, I wrote about the first time back in 1990. That story was all through the ghetto: “They had him cornered, and motherfucker jumped off the railroad bridge and kept running. Did not want to die that day.” But we did want it to feel a little bit mythic, and “What the fuck?” because it fit with the general arc of Greek tragedy.

From the people who brought you the Dangerous Catch knock-off Ice Road Truckers comes “Ax Men,” a new reality show about loggers premiering March 9th. Watch a preview video on History.com. As far as I can tell, I didn’t see any owls crushed under boot heel or zombies beheaded by a spinning gravity-gun sawblade.

One thing we’re already sure to see more of than we’ve seen on other shows of this type: missing limbs. One of the loggers in the preview video is missing a toe, while another has lost most of his hand.

All in the Family was a particular favorite.

Most actors would sacrifice their first born child to score the lead role in a major television series. Especially if that major television series turns out to be a hit. A particularly lucky few have not only landed such gigs, but have managed to pull off the rare ego-stroking double-play of acting in the series and singing the theme song. Because they’re just that talented.
