Art of Writing: the Parker 51

I’ve been enthralled with this pen since I was a teenager. In college, I had a part-time job selling men’s clothes in an upscale shop on an upscale shopping street. Every day I would wander into this small vintage gift shop across the road and look at the 2 or 3 Parker 51s they had in the case. They seemed complete out of reach, price-wise, for a college kid.

Later in life I saw one that was just beautiful. I should have bought it for myself but I made a mistake and gave it to someone as a gift. I’ve regretted it for years. These pens are just marvels. Its part engineering and part history that make them so “I gotta have it” for me. From its early use of Lucite, to the Tonight, in chatting with one of my bestest pals, I was led to search on them and came across this fantastic website, VintagePens.Com

This site has a lovely collection of pens from all over the world, including a special edition Parker DuoFold I’m now just head-over-heels for.

I bought one of their Parker 51s. **UPDATE** The pen I bought was already sold. Oh well. I’m still looking, but someday I’ll get one.

Gun Paint Kits are a dig at NYC Mayor

Seems Mayor Bloomberg declared gun paint kits a menace and helped declare them illegal. While these new kits by Lauer aren’t for sale in NYC — they are named after its 5 boroughs and include a stencil to add the Mayors face to your gun.

Snazzy!

“Making a quick buck by coloring a handgun to look like a toy is craven and beneath any honest businessman,” Bloomberg said. “By coloring these guns, a real one looks like a toy, and a police officer won’t be able to tell the difference.”

DIY Soviet Lawnmower

Those Russians and their wacky lawnmowers! It’s like a sitcom waiting to happen.

But still there were lucky ones, those who were lucky enough to have a lawn to take care of and time to do this. They wanted to have a lawnmower but couldn’t buy it – nobody sold them, again, because all the shops were state owned and all suppliers to the shops were state owned factories, producing things according to the Soviet Party Plan without any correlation to the demands of those minor fortunate lawn-owner group members. So they had to build lawnmowers themselves. Different parts of other more available house hold appliances were used, like: child bicycle, baby trolley and the engine was taken from Soviet washing machine.

At 5 ounces, Leatherman claims this is the lightest full-size multi-tool ever (less than full-size being those tiny keychain models). The stainless steel blade and bottle opener are accessible when the tool is closed.

This is the latest and greatest Leatherman that Popular Mechanics got their hands on. It will be available in November for $72 or $96 for the carbon fiber version. Tighten a loose screw, open a beer and shank some bitches all in one device!
