One of the greatest movies of all time, sure to bring groans of “Not that again!” from my family during the holidays, is A Christmas Story and over at Uncrate they’ve uncovered the Ultimate Collector’s Edition.

I wish it came with a Red Ryder BB gun.

Tucker Max movie script panned

A script reader got a hold of the movie written by professional internet bastard Tucker Max, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. They didn’t like it. (This is where I would tried to add “They must have been fat — or a woman!” but the sarcasm just didn’t come through.)

One other highlight before I go down for my mono nap: A major comic set piece in the script is when Tucker makes his big sexual conquest over a midget. And that’s the joke. Not that that she has a big, tall or tiny, little boyfriend who comes after Tucker, or that she looks at his junk and says “I’ve had bigger” (I am not saying that’s very funny…but it is at least a joke) or, for that matter, anything anyone says throughout is humorous. Just that she’s a midget. Because midgets are inherently funny, not to mention cutting edge for comedy. Especially when the writers emphasize how grotesque it is simply to be a little person and to have short, “sausage fingers” that barely wrap around a guy’s…well you get the picture. Isn’t that hilarious? She’s small and therefore a freak. Comedy paydirt. I only wish I could get more! Wait, I’ve got it: Someone should get a bunch of midgets and like travel around the country with them so people can laugh at their comedy (i.e. that they exist) …maybe get some other inherently funny people like ladies with facial hair to join in, and draw attention to the comedy show with like a big, bright tent or something. I am on fire with ideas today. My point isn’t that the above is offensive, but that it’s not even slightly funny. Ever. Ditto the rest of the script.

Of course, a shitstorm erupts in the comments as Tucker Max fans claim that the script reader [em]just didn’t understand the humor[/em] and therefor must be (wait for it) fat and a woman. (But she can prove them otherwise by posting a picture!)

Video: Danny Kaye in the Court Jester

Sometimes, we all just need to laugh. When I do, I pull the Court Jester DVD off the shelf. While no one will ever Out Fox the Fox, this may be one of the funniest moments in movie history. Danny Kaye is one of my favorite comedic actors of all time; Basil Rathbone is just excellent and the young Angela Lansbury makes me wonder about that old bat on Murder She Wrote.

Great Movies: The Thomas Crown Affair

Sometimes, after being swamped with movies like I Am Legend (which was so far off from the book as to be telling a different story) and whatever that Cloverfield thing was, it becomes easy to forget how awesome the art of movie-making can be. Then a friend IMs and tells you to turn on Turner Classic Movies.

Last night we saw The Thomas Crown Affair. Steve McQueen rules; Fay Dunaway is in her prime. McQueen plays Thomas Crown, a handsome rich guy who masterminds a perfect crime. Dunaway is an insurance investigator who, investigating the crime, begins a very flirty relationship with Crown. There is awesome use of split-screens and imagery—the “chess scene,” for instance—that you simply don’t get in most of today’s films. I suggest checking TCM and seeing if they’re going to replay it soon.

I’ve never seen the 1999 remake. I wonder if they do the chess scene and if it is any good?

Internet History: RadiSkull and Devil Doll

It has been so long since I’ve visited my friends the RadiSkull and his pal Devil Doll. This stuff was so funny, I remember watching it over and over and over.

RadiSkulls no non-sense attitude. Devil Doll’s yearning to be loved. Joe Sparks delivered it all. Who can forget Devil Doll’s classic lyrics:

The Real-Life Indiana Jones?

I had never heard this! I’m doing a quick troll of Wikipedia to see if I can find anything — HOWEVER reading a quick blurb about a new series in production for the Smithsonian Channel entitiled True Story suggests the character is based on a real person.

The new series will explore the real-life history of Indiana Jones (The
fourth movie in the series opens in May)

Wikipedia suggests a few possible sources… such as Roy Chapman Andrews, an Adventurer/Naturalist and Hiram Bingham III who discovered the lost city of Macchu Picchu and then went on to serve as Govenor of Connecticut and serve in the US Senate.

I could swear, but I don’t know where I heard it, that Indy was based on Allan Quartermain.

Regardless, it sounds fun to me! Other episodes will focus on Eliot Ness and the Untouchables, and the famous 3 man escape from Alcatraz Island.

Bond Actress Lois Maxwell Passes On

Lois Maxwell, the original Miss Moneypenny, has died at age 80. BBC News has a tribute from Roger Moore, who knew Maxwell even before he took over the role of James Bond.

I think it was a great disappointment to her that she had not been promoted to play M. She would have been a wonderful M.
