Deadliest Catch Up

So it’s become clear from last night’s episode: Blake is a real asshole. First he heads out on his own boat without any plans of where to place his pots, then when he finally turns in decent numbers he won’t take the risk and put down a string somewhere another captain hasn’t already scouted. Then [...]

Pigging Out the Edwardian Way

How did the well-off eat in Edwardian England? Meatily, according to this piece on Times Online. Here’s a sample from a week of Edwardian eating:
Breakfast at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand: Smoked haddock, scrambled eggs, kippers, cold cuts, one roast pheasant, fruit, bacon, sausages, devilled kidneys, scones and kedgeree. … Lunch at Rules, Covent Garden: Oysters, foie gras terrine, [...]

Drinking Horse Milk

Whiny American pussy mans up enough to drink horse milk, won’t eat squid. [David Lebovitz]

100-Year-Old Rockfish

A 100-year-old rockfish was caught in Alaska. She’s a real ugly mother (and big at 60 pounds!) but some scientists think they might be able to live to be the strangely precise age of 157. [MSNBC/AP]

Morning Tonic: Fish Teeth

BoredStop.com has a photoset up of a fish they say was pulled from the Congo River—I’m going to say it’s an oversized African Tiger Fish. Look at the tail in the other pictures. It looks right.

At first I felt sorry for the poor guy who is sucked into the tiny break room television in this video, as he stands embarrassed by the rapping crew chief who explains him how to properly cook a Wendy’s burger. Then I realized that having a rapping co-worker would be pretty much the only way [...]

As if we needed more proof that New York was the most delivery-friendly city in the world, today’s Thrillist uncovers a horrifyingly fantastic new service called, simply, “Fresh Meats.”
You choose an easy-to-smuggle, live delicacy (chicken, duck, squab, rabbit, even a snake or frog), and FM will lead it to your tub and do-what-must-be-done. Once it’s [...]

28 Weeks Later Trailer

The sequel to the totally enjoyable zombie flick 28 Days Later has a trailer on Apple. Here’s a direct link to the Quicktime. [28 Weeks Later/Apple]

Big Ol’ Cane Toad Found

Nicknamed “Toadzilla,” a good-sized cane toad has been found in Australia, measuring 8 inches and just under two pounds. Wouldn’t quite call it “dog-sized,” but that’s still hefty. Are cane toad legs good eatin’? [BBC]

This commercial from the ’80s is a high water mark for the form. Can advertising get more hypnotic than this? Must consume more chicken mince.

Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels. Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them breaks and splinters. That is the “loser,” and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round.
