Jonas at Drink of the Week has shared this fine Halloween (or just horror movie watching) Drinking game. It includes such activities as:

I remember when I needed an excuse to drink. Now I have a slipped disc. I can start drinking at 8am and everyone just smiles and nods.

Wii Music — How do I miss this stuff?

Reader John sent me a link to Wii Music in response to yesterdays Rock Band Stage Lighting Kit.

Holy Cow does this look like FUN! This appears to be the first game since Wii Bowling that I might actually want to play. I’ve bought so many games for the Wii and can safely say that only Wii Sports and Super Mario Galaxy got much play.

Beat on a drum, play air guitar, the video on the Nintendo site even makes the horns/wind instruments look fun!

Has anyone tried this? Should I buy it right now?

Video Gaming without Waking the Baby:X3 Wireless Headset and Mic

Look — when the aliens get here my child will be horrified if Daddy just lays down and lets them take over. She expects Pops to keep the reflexes sharp, crack a brute over the head, grab his weapons and get to saving New Mombasa.

How to do that while she is sleeping in the next room? Easy! The Turtle Beach Earforce X3 Wireless Headset ended my gaming draught.

Look the sound quality is nothing like my cheap Klipsch digital audio kit, esp if you can find the 5.1 version (disco’d I think) — BUT I AM BACK IN THE GAME.

Set up was reasonably easy — you basically shunt the sound via RCA adaptors into the RF unit and turn it on. This was a bit freaky for me as I used the optical out on my X360 to feed the Klipsch 5.1 system. The Xbox 360 HDMI cable had RCA outs for sound, so I tried them and they worked. Nice!

The headset fits well, the mic works nicely — there are independent volume controls for player speech and video game sounds: you can control the levels. They are light (but not cheap feeling) and unobtrusive. Sometimes I forget I’m trying to be quiet and my wife can hear a brief shout of “And thats how you use a chainsaw, Bitch!” over the intercom — but so far Baby has not woken up and Marcus Fenix can keep on keepin’ on.

If the line of sight from the IR looking RF unit gets broken sound can get crackly or disappear. As you’re generally stationary while gaming, while rocking back and forth like a rhesus monkey, I’ve found sound to be consistent and clear.

The only big issue thus far? Networked RockBand seems a non-starter with the guitar. The headset must be plugged into a handset due to plastic molding of the jack. Can’t plug it into the guitar and I haven’t really messed around to figure it out. Thats ok, I belong playing guitar on a stringed instrument.

All in all, this is a good solution that gets baby 100% of what she needs and me about 87% of the sound quality I’d like. Its a B+ on sound and an A+ on function.

Gibson 0wnz Guitar Hero?

Seems Gibson, maker of fine guitars, feels Activision is infringing a patent it holds around guitar simulations.

It seems, however, that Gibson isn’t at all satisfied with the arrangement it has with Activision. Gibson has sent a notice to Activision declaring that the games publisher is infringing upon the guitar maker’s patent for a concept similar to Guitar Hero.

U.S. Patent number 5990405 awarded to Gibson in 1999 read, “A musician can simulate participation in a concert by playing a musical instrument and wearing a head-mounted 3D display that includes stereo speakers. Audio and video portions of a musical concert are pre-recorded, along with a separate sound track corresponding to the musical instrument played by the musician.”

I wonder if this means GH4 will come with a sweet plastic PRS?

An 18 year old in Florida died while “surfing” a Cadillac Escalade. Evidently he was in a shopping cart, holding on to the Caddy. They hit a speed bump and his eulogy will be very embarrassing.

Cameron Bieberle, 18, of Winter Park was thrown to the ground after the Cadillac sport utility vehicle he was holding onto hit a speed bump late Saturday night, investigators said.

“He was riding alongside a Cadillac Escalade, sitting in the cart and hanging onto the side,” said Kim Miller, spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol. “The Escalade hit a speed bump and he was ejected.

Rant: Tetris Cosplay Fight

I’m normally okay with the creativity and dedication it takes to participate in cosplay, but this instance just pisses me off. I’ll give these fighting Tetris cosplayers some props for originality, but there are some big problems. First, it is at an anime convention. Second, the T-block has four blocks, not five. The T-shape is arguably the most versatile shape in the Tetris-arsenal, and this costume is like shitting all over my childhood. Third, Tetris blocks shouldn’t fight. Tetris taught me about cooperation and working together to accomplish a goal (even if that goal is similar to genocide). No hate, Tetris blocks.

Barcadia will be what its name suggests: a mishmash of a watering hole and a 12-game arcade situated in a 3,000-square-foot building at 1917 N. Henderson Ave. … Remember Galaxia? Ms. Pac Man? Frogger? Would-be players won’t be forced to feed six coins into games to play. Barcadia’s owners, Humphries and Billy Blatty, are committed to keeping each play a reasonable and traditional 25 cents.

Joel is a fan of Brooklyn’s Barcade, but now I’ll be able to enjoy my own retro bar and arcade when Barcadia opens in Dallas mid-October. Hit me up if you are ever interested in an ass-kicking in Galaga.

D&D 4.0 Announced

I haven’t played Dungeons & Dragons for years, but I do like to occasionally see what the rules are up to. It appears the rules are shedding the husk of the third (and third-point-five) edition to erupt crackling in a new “4.0″ edition sometime next year.

I’ve been trying to get other writers in New York to join me in a D&D game for a long time, but all they want to do is play poker. If I could figure out a way to make them lose real money while dungeon crawling, I might have something.

The Art of Glen Angus

I recently stumbled on the art of Glen Angus and was struck by his talent, despite the fact that military pin-up posters aren’t the sort of thing for which I’m typically ga-ga. But the guy knew how to paint, for sure, and I passed the link on to friends.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I’d been introduced to Angus online before just a few weeks ago, when his employer, game-maker Raven Soft, pointed out that Angus had passed away.

At the time I didn’t take notice of just another random person dying, but for some reason finding his work later and putting it all together struck me, so I think the least I can do is show you guys the output of a talented, loving man who clearly had much more to give.

World’s Best/Worst Videogame Endings

Unlike the Mortal Kombat 4 video we’ve got after the jump, this ending from Neo Contra is clearly tongue-in-cheek. That doesn’t make it any less great, however; I think I’ll watch it every morning to prepare to face the day.

The MK4 ending is just trash, though. What a joke of a series.
