Perhaps to launch a rocket and destroy the slow jerk in the Caddy? Or to vaporize the small woman in the RAV-4? Seems such cool gadgetry is available outside of Q’s labs — you just need the disposable cash of a drug runner.

Mexican soldiers battling a violent drug gang and corrupt local police confiscated a sport utility vehicle decked out with extras worthy of a James Bond movie.

What kind of cool tricks did the drug runners install? Nothing nearly as cool as we’d like — I need a rocket booster, lasers and the Mach 5’s tree trimmers — plus a Spy Hunter oil slick. I guess Mexican drug runners lack the same cash-reserves of say Columbian drug runners.

Simo Häyhä, a Finnish sniper operating during the Winter War between Finland and Russia just before WWII, had over five hundred confirmed kills using iron sights.

The unofficial Finnish frontline figure from the battlefield of Kollaa places the number of Häyhä’s sniper kills at 542. A daily account of the kills at Kollaa was conducted for the Finnish snipers. Häyhä used a Finnish variant, M28, of the Soviet Mosin-Nagant rifle (known as “Pystykorva” rifle), because it suited his small frame (5 ft/1.52 m). He preferred to use iron sights rather than telescopic sights to present a smaller target (the sniper must raise their head higher when using telescopic sights) and aid concealment (sun reflecting off telescopic sight lenses can reveal a sniper’s position).

Besides his sniper kills, Simo Häyhä was also credited with as many as two hundred kills with a Suomi M-31 SMG submachine gun, thus bringing his credited kills to at least 705. However, the latter claim has never been substantiated. All of Häyhä’s kills were accomplished within 100 days prior to injuries caused by an enemy bullet. Häyhä’s record of an average of 5 kills a day, almost one kill per daylight hour of the short winter day, is unique.

Because the “Sticky/Stickly Bomb” had a tendency to occasionally stick to its thrower instead a target, Capt. R.S. Gammon, a British paratrooper, invented an updated model towards the end of World War II that bore his name:

The basic design was to use a fuze, already available in the 69 Grenade, which was then inserted into the mouth of an elasticized stockingette bag. This bag could then be filled with up to 0,9kg of moulded plastic explosives which was part of the paratrooper’s normal equipment. The amount of plastic explosive varied according to the job for which it was designed. Priming of the detonation occurred when a steel ball dropped on the action of the bomb being thrown. Upon impact the bomb exploded. The fuze setting was originally a four second one through a weighted tape unravelling from the fuze after being thrown. Ordnance ‘boffins’ were appalled at the shortness of fuze, and the quantity of explosive that the bomb could contain, and accordingly ordered a seven seconds delay in order to ensure the thrower’s safety. However, most users preferred the shorter tape, irrespective of the danger involved, and cut the tapes back to a four second delay.

The Gammon Grenade ended up being terrifyingly effective:

During the invasion of Southern France in 1944 members of 5 Parachute Bn, in order to prevent movement from, or to, the beachead, took up positions in overhanging trees above access roads. Half-charge Gammon bombs, filled with road tarmac-mixing stones for anti-personnel purposes – in place of the customary plastic explosives – were dropped into open troop carrying vehicles with considerable effect.
…
In military history it is renowned as being the only officially issued ‘do-it-yourself’ grenade.

I’m normally okay with the creativity and dedication it takes to participate in cosplay, but this instance just pisses me off. I’ll give these fighting Tetris cosplayers some props for originality, but there are some big problems. First, it is at an anime convention. Second, the T-block has four blocks, not five. The T-shape is arguably the most versatile shape in the Tetris-arsenal, and this costume is like shitting all over my childhood. Third, Tetris blocks shouldn’t fight. Tetris taught me about cooperation and working together to accomplish a goal (even if that goal is similar to genocide). No hate, Tetris blocks.

What is it about old men beating up young guys that is so charming? Violence, on the whole, is to be avoided at all costs, but when a senior citizen puts five in the kisser of some young punk, it loses all its frightening overtones.

Bill Barnes says he was scratching off a losing $2 lottery ticket inside a gas station when he felt a hand slip into his front-left pants pocket, where he had $300 in cash.

He immediately grabbed the person’s wrist with his left hand and started throwing punches with his right, landing six or seven blows before a store manager intervened.

I went to look up the famous Buzz Aldrin punch (thrown into the face of a man who called him a “coward and a liar” for faking the moon landing) and it ended up being the first item Google suggested in my Firefox search when typing in “Buzz Aldrin.” Dude walks on the moon, but his old man punch is going to end up being his legacy.

eXile’s War Nerd wrote a fascinating column about Count Carl Gustav von Rosen, a Swedish aristocrat that led a flight of hand-painted Cessnas into battle against MiG-17—okay, the jets were on the ground—and other military targets in the Biafra conflict in Nigeria.

Von Rosen specialized in noble lost causes. Way back in 1938, when he was just a kid, he volunteered to fly for the Finns in their ultra-cool, hopeless fight against the Red Army. The Finns had no bombers so von Rosen just grabbed a civilian airliner, loaded it up with bombs and dropped them on the Reds from the passenger doors. … The Fleas turned their weaknesses into advantages in true guerrilla style. They were so slow that they had to fly real low — which made them almost impossible to hit in the jungle, since you never saw them till they were on top of you. The low speed made for better aim: almost half the 400 68mm rockets they fired hit their targets, which is an amazing score for unguided AS munitions. (There used to be a joke in the USAF that if it wasn’t for the law of gravity, unguided AS rockets couldn”t even hit the ground.)

Going to war over oil is pretty horrible—I think we’d all rather just find a way to live without the constant infusion of oil. But going to war over beer? I am already packing my bags.

Mamand Mamandy, a Kurdish Iranian who sought asylum to Norway in ‘99, was back in Iran visiting his mother when he was spotted outside at a BBQ drinking two beers. (Yes, I am ignoring the head-scratcher about an asylum seeker going back to Iran.) Police spotted Manandy, took him into the station, and administered 130 lashes.

I mean, seriously*, what the fuck is wrong with these people? It’s not like Mamandy was smoking a joint, then righteously hauled off to prison for several years to protect the feeble-minded citizens. All he was doing was enjoying a mild adulterant in the comfort of his family’s home. These Iranians are crazy animals! What rational government would do something so awful to a man who wasn’t hurting anyone? We better invade and teach these monsters the wisdom of Western justice.

Is Danny Sullivan’s “Real Kickboxing Bag Workout” actually “real?” Does it exist in our shared dimensional space? I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it does, because anyone selling you a $350 set of instructional DVDs, a water-filled kick-boxing bag, a jump rope, and a pair of boxing gloves must know about the brutal awareness of being that comes when one’s face is pressed in by a fist.

Danny Sullivan’s program is more interesting to me as a product-based business. Ever since reading The Four-Hour Work Week I’ve been keeping a sharper eye on these sorts of infomercialesque products. Sullivan sells his set of DVDs for $50, which include “five exciting workouts on four DVDs.” The manufacturing cost for the DVDs is obviously negligable, ignoring the initial production expenses, so he’s still probably making a pretty good return on just the DVDs. But then he’ll sell the kickboxing equipment set for an additional $300, which I very much doubt costs him much over $50 to produce. By having the DVDs as a separate option he makes them seem almost affordable, while I’m certain they also serve as advertisements for the more expensive and profitable equipment sets. Smart!
