Pregnant Man on Oprah

Thomas Beatie, the “Pregnant Man,” will be on The Oprah Winfrey Show Thursday, April 3rd.

Thomas is a transgender man who kept his female reproductive organs and is six months pregnant.

Apparently, his current wife can’t have children, so he is doing the duty. Thomas was artificially inseminated and is expecting a baby girl in July.

Announcing Lemons in the Kitchen

My kid sister Rachel Fracassa, having just completed a rigorous raw food chef certification after a couple of years of solo training, has just opened her new business, “Lemons in the Kitchen.” I’m super proud of her, even if I have every intention to continue eating cooked meat, at least until the day she can finally make raw BBQ pulled pork. (And knowing her, it may be possible. She can make quiche out of psyllium husk. No joke.)

If you’re in the Kansas City area and are interested in learning more about gourmet raw food, having Rachel come over and teach you some techniques, or simply having her make you some raw food that tastes like, you know, food, I’m sure she’d love to hear from you.

Frauenfelder: “Dangerous Book for Boys” Not All That Dangerous

Good on Mark Frauenfelder for telling me something I wanted to know: that the “Dangerous Book for Boys” by Conn and Hal Iggulden is actually all that dangerous. (Not a surprise in our litigious society, but I had held out hope since the book original ran in the UK, where every boy at 13 is required to snort heroin off a copy of the Magna Carta.)

Even better, Mark has assembled a list of older project books for boys going back over 100 years that actually are sort of dangerous, or at least have projects with an element of risk involved. Trust me, boys are going to do two things when they’re at an impressionable age: not read books they don’t have to and fill up plastic lighter fluid containers with gasoline and kick them across the yard to leave an impossible-to-cover track of scorched earth in the backyard. Nobody should be afraid of a book explaining the fun of, say, explosions. Boys already know.

At least the shrill caricatures of moms that I’m not quite sure ever actually existed, except when they were my buddy Mike’s hilarious Filipina mother Linda, who would chide his bad language with screams of “What the shit, Michael. Clips: Knocked Up Trailer

Judd Apatow directed 40-Year-Old Virgin, probably 2005’s best comedy, and is back with Knocked Up, which he not only directed but wrote. (The movie’s poster, featuring Seth Rogan’s mug, is even set on a gradient background that is reminiscent of Virgin’s Steve Carrell poster.) The regular Apatow gang is back, with Paul Rudd, James Franco, Martin Starr and Jason Segel in supporting roles, but with Seth Rogan finally due his place in the spotlight.

Apatow’s stuff ends up being poignant while still hilarious, somehow a caricature of real life but more realistic than almost anything else. I’m really glad he’s finding success in the movies he never did in TV.

When Getting Pregnant Makes Women Crazy for Sex

Sure, not every woman who gets knocked up turns into a fleshy weeble-wobble aching for cock, but after reading this man’s experience, I wish they would. According to Jayden, whose wife is currently carrying around his spawn, sometimes, if you’re lucky, carrying a baby inside transforms her into the dirty tramp you’d always wished she’d be. Besides the obvious, what’s the benefit? I’ll let him explain his rationale:

1. It’s Perverted. Mounting a pregger-lady is like screwing your Mom. Naughty. Incestuous. My cock stiffens now when I see nine-monthers struggling down the street.

Convicted Father Ditches On Son’s Kidney Transplant

Check it out: Byron Keith Perkins was serving time for bank robbery, and awaiting sentencing for marijuana distribution and unlawful transport of firearms. Looking at around 25 years in the pen. He’s released temporarily to see if he had a compatible kidney to donate to his dialysis-stricken son, but instead of following through on that he flees to Mexico, where he is picked up in Puerto Vallarta with his girlfriend and returned to the states.

That’s about the biggest “fuck you, kid” I’ve ever heard of. His son has fortunately received a valid kidney from an anonymous donor and is doing fine, but is understandably happy that his father was caught. Says the boy,

It’s a pretty bad thing that he did, I don’t know how he could lay his head down at night knowing he ran away and left me up here to die like that.

Tequila and tacos probably helped, I’m guessing. Hey, if I was looking at a quarter of a century in the slammer I might have skipped out too, but not until after taking care of my son. What a shitbag. Here’s another guy who I hope has overly aggressive, well-built, enormously hung cell mates.

The Bloviator Chews Out His 11 Y.O. Daughter

I don’t know what’s more disturbing: The way that Alec Baldwin would take such offense at his daughter, Addie, an alleged “rude, thoughtless little pig”, for not picking up the phone when he called, or that, presumably, her mother, Kim Basinger, leaked the incensed rant he left on her voice mail to the public.

Baldwin made repeated threats to “come out there and straighten [her] ass out for good.” He said he’d be on a plane on Friday the 20th,” was very specific about the date. On the other hand, perhaps he was merely auditioning for one of David Mamet’s Ford commercials.

Divorce is hard, when you add children and custody matters to the issue, it is that much worse; nobody’s arguing that Baldwin needn’t be torn up by these personal issues—everyone is entitled to let the ball drop and act like assholes once in a while. I’m not sure that he deserves the world listening in on his anguish or his infantile way of responding to it, though. This uncertainty, however, isn’t precluding me from adding to the netbuzz on the issue here.

One now wonders if, after all the buzz, he is in fact on his way to have it out with his young daughter. An industrious man would start immediately peddling “Save Addie” t-shirts.

Men One Step Closer To Obsolescence: Sperm From Women?

UK scientists from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne are working on a way to produce sperm cells from bone marrow. They feel it may be possible in time to enable men, incapable of producing sperm, to have their own offspring. Following successful production of pre-sperm cells from the stem cells within men’s bone marrow, the research is now turning attention to producing similar results from women’s. The prospects for this research are profound: if successful, it may allow lesbian couples to have their own biological offspring. Moreover, any children from this process would invariably be female, as a male sperm with a Y chromosome is necessary for male development.

The prospects for this research continuing are hanging, as expected, on the question of ethics. Professor Karim Nayernia of the university has said,

The problem is whether the sperm cells are functional or not. I don’t think there is an ethical barrier, so long as it’s safe. We are in the process of applying for ethical approval. We are preparing now to apply to use the existing bone marrow stem cell bank here in Newcastle. We need permission from the patient who supplied the bone marrow, the ethics committee and the hospital itself.

German researchers were able to create viable artificial sperm from mice last year that did result in live offspring; the math works, but Prof. Nayerina estimates that it will be another three to five years before his labs can coax human spermatagonial stem cells to progress to mature sperm in the laboratory.
