Fiona the Bulldog Raffle

This little bulldog pup is named Fiona. She was left unattended by her breeder for three months when she developed sores all over her body, causing her feet to swell up. She was left in a high kill shelter where she was picked up by “Bullies and Bassets,” a dog rescue operation in Florida.

Because bulldogs have inherent problems with their skin and iffy immune systems to begin with, Fiona’s chances looked grim, but it’s been a week since she was rescued and put on antibiotics and things are looking up, but she’ll need a lot of daily care for a long time.

I threw in ten bucks in the raffle that B&B is holding today, the proceeds of which are going entirely to Fiona’s care. We don’t know Fiona or her owners at all—Susie just came across her on Myspace randomly—but it sort of broke our hearts, as we are avowed suckers for bulldogs, especially ones that have been needlessly mistreated. I tossed the widget code in this post if you want to buy a couple of tickets for the raffle, or you can just donate directly to barronjd@gmail.com. Obviously we can’t vouch for them, but it looks like these guys are doing good work, so I figured it might be worth risking a couple of bucks for a sweet pup.

Thank you for posting the information about Fiona on your website, that is awesome!! Yes, we are legit, but B&B is not holding the raffle for Fiona, I am. My English Bulldog Rudy has a profile on MySpace and I read Fiona’s story on Petfinder.com, and that’s how it all started, my heart broke after reading what happened to her. I keep in touch with Fiona’s foster mom almost every day and she sends me pictures and updates on Fiona which I post in a bulletin on MySpace to keep everyone up to date on Fiona’s recovery. This little girl has made great strides in her recovery and we all are so happy to see her getting better as each day goes by. The Chip In box expires October 22, I will be sending 100% of all contributions directly to Fiona’s vet to help with the costs of Fiona’s medical care.

Again, thank you, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the time you took to post Fiona’s story and Chip in box on your website.

Yöghund: Frozen Yogurt for Dogs

As the owner of an easily-overheated dog who for some reason hates ice water, I’m intrigued by these new Yöghund frozen yogurt treats designed specifically for our smelly hair-pals. All organic, which is good—dogs are allergic to the most surprising things—and not even super expensive, as far as dog treats go: just $6, plus shipping, for four.

Of course, it’d be cheaper to teach Porter to eat ice cubes like a normal dog. Maybe if I made them with a little meat juice in them?

Michael Vick Dog Chew Toy

I am shocked—shocked!—that someone would make a chew toy for dogs shaped like alleged dog electrocuter Michael Vick.

Mostly because I didn’t think of it first.

The creators claim that the proceeds will go toward animal welfare charities, but who knows. I think you should skip over the Michael Vick toy, karmaful as it is, and give your pup a good, long skritching.

Michael Vick is a Twat

I mentioned to a friend last night that Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has been indicted on dog-fighting charges, and he sort of shrugged. “Don’t you eat meat? What’s wrong with letting animals kill each other?” The problem is, of course, that hunting animals or raising them for food doesn’t require—in theory—any unnecessary cruelty. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with eating meat, per se, but we’re cognizant enough now as a people to realize that preventing unnecessary suffering isn’t just the polite thing to do, it also makes the meat taste better. That’s why we don’t send bulldogs after bulls any longer.

But for me it’s just worse because it’s dogs. Dogs aren’t just animals anymore, to my mind. They’re a symbiotic species that’s evolved to feed on our love. That’s why I can see racks and racks of pigs in a window, animals just as smart as dogs, and not feel a lick of remorse: pigs are dicks. I’d probably eat dog in another country, just like I’d eat whale or anything else at least once, but the pangs I feel when I see pictures of food dogs on the street in Asia are unavoidable.

My point: Michael Vick, a man who made millions of dollars to play a game, should know better than to electrocute, torture, and otherwise treat as completely disposable one of the nicest species on the planet. I hope he goes to jail for a suitable amount of time.

Gadgets for Dogs

My old friends at Wired.com have put together two great tastes that taste great together: cute widdle doggers and gadgets. (Seriously, dogs taste awesome. Try it.) Their ten-picture gallery, which, if I may be so bold, is a “fluffy piece of digg bait,” shows the latest in useless accessories for your K9, none of which can probably withstand the harsh blast of urea that will inevitably find its way in between their molded plastic cracks.

Actually, “Doggles” are pretty great if you ever take your dog for a ride in the car. I’ve always had a dream I could get Porter a pair, one of those pointy Kaiser Wilhelm hats, and a sidecar for the motorcycle I don’t own. But a cellphone with GPS for a dog? Get out.
