Apparently these paper dolls were from the “Doc Dare” and “Scion” comics once printed in Penthouse. They’re very well done—and I consider myself something of an expert on Feminazi paper dolls. (I believe this is the only one, making my expertise readily achievable.)
They are cartoons, obviously, but probably also NSFW.

I recently stumbled on the art of Glen Angus and was struck by his talent, despite the fact that military pin-up posters aren’t the sort of thing for which I’m typically ga-ga. But the guy knew how to paint, for sure, and I passed the link on to friends.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I’d been introduced to Angus online before just a few weeks ago, when his employer, game-maker Raven Soft, pointed out that Angus had passed away.

At the time I didn’t take notice of just another random person dying, but for some reason finding his work later and putting it all together struck me, so I think the least I can do is show you guys the output of a talented, loving man who clearly had much more to give.

Archaeologists have discovered this ivory carving of a wooly mammoth, which they have dated back some 35,000 years, crafted by the earliest “modern humans.”

The figure of the woolly mammoth is tiny, measuring just 3.7 cm long and weighing a mere 7.5 grams, and displays skilfully detailed carvings. It is unique in its slim form, pointed tail, powerful legs and dynamically arched trunk. It is decorated with six short incisions, and the soles of the pachyderm’s feet show a crosshatch pattern. The miniature lion is 5.6 cm long, has a extended torso and outstretched neck. It is decorated with approximately 30 finely incised crosses on its spine.

Am I the only New Yorker who has never been able to figure out why creepy uncle-cum-hipster icon/mainstream quasi-pornographer Terry Richardson is the slightest bit relevant? I’d say it was a generation gap thing, but the man is older than me, yet he is lionized by the 18-30 year old set and those who masturbate furiously to the notion that they’re younger than their true peers.

I’ve always been utterly disgusted by this guy, yet strangely fascinated, and I guess that’s the long and short of it. VICE Magazine is up the man’s ass like a hamster, and in 2004 Australia’s Lee Jeans paid him an unprecedented 200,000 to shoot their ad campaign. That dirty fucking scumbag nails all of his models, and they’re real models too. As in hot, young, and full of drugs. And they let him deliver the bone which I just don’t understand, and would rather not think about.

He’s living the life, yet he’s covered in shitty tattoos, wanks the sleaziest moustache a man ever wanked, and has the body of a meth addict. (Not the Sizemore kind, the juvenile delinquent kind.) Let’s say nothing of those fearsome yellow 70’s shooter glasses and that ridiculous buzzcut. Or let’s. No, let’s not.

I remember my aunt once remarking that if you looked hard enough at Rick James, you could contract a venereal disease. Whereas I think that if you look hard enough at Terry Richardson, you’ll never want to have sex again.

Some particularly NSFW images are available HERE. Please note that in the image where he’s rimming the supermodel, he has quite visible earwax. What the fuck gives? What am I missing here? Why do the fashionable elite drop everything, panties and all, for this scrawny pervert?

Cool business cards are highly advised, but many of the examples shown in this survey are of such odd shape that I can’t imagine anyone being able to carry around more than a few—nor anyone receiving one to do anything but pitch them in the trash. If it can’t fit into my wallet, I don’t want it. If someone tried to hand me a block of lucite like the one pictured above, I’d have to politely decline or ask for some cocaine to go with it.

Still, better too creative than not creative enough, I suppose.

Normally, I’m just not a fan of the novelty tee shirt. After 30 y.o. you really gotta leave that noise behind or risk being the asshole who never outgrew the follies of his youth, AKA the friend your buddies’ wives don’t want to let them play with. Which means, of course, you should buy this shirt for your buddies.

Actually, this is a thinly-veiled pitch to turn you lot on to one of the more bizarre and wonderful comics I’ve come across in some time, Animals Have Problems Too. The author/illustrator, Zach VandeZande teaches English on the college level so you know he’s got to be at least a little off-kilter, a claim upon which anyone who’s ever taken a dozen college level English classes will attest. This collection of weirdness seems to be doing him the service of a purge, so you know it’s only the finest in angst, misery, and self-doubt.

All of his work marries well with that afternoon cup of coffee. Try it, you’ll see that I’m right.

Like any kid who ever opened up the right box of Cracker Jack, I have always loved those nifty lenticular doodads that change the image depending on the angle at which you are looking at it. Dave Spencer of instructables.com apparently opened the same boxes, and he’s written up a report of how he assembled his own lenticular image, using stills from Fight Club.

His process for finding and constructing his chosen images was pretty interesting; he chose to make two panoramic images from seperate panning shots from the film, as well as separate images of the characters from other scenes. They’ve been beautifully stitched together in Fireworks, which reminded me of the work done by NYC artist Damian Loeb, who follows a similar process in his studies for his hyper-realistic paintings.

I wish Spencer had gone into greater detail on the software that interlaced his images. Like, which one he used, what the interlacing measurements were, and how they correspond to the lenticular sheets that he received from the (nameless) California distributor. I think that would have been useful, as would a URL for said distributor. And which grade of lenticular sheet did he use? (They seem to come in 30, 40, and 60 lines per inch.)

One page I’ve since come across that very neatly explains how this low grade yet super cool tech works was here: www.lenstar.org/how/plastic.htm

He does delve a little too much into how he took what seems like a lot of trouble to frame the final product, which seems a bit self-indulgent, but he apparently went to some trouble in the building, so good for him. I want more about how to properly align the lenticular sheet to the image, and I’ll find my own way to mount the final product.

Still, it’s food for thought. I like to make all my holiday presents. For the past few years I’ve been making decoupaged serving trays and boxes and such. This year I think I’ll make lenticular images and decoupage the frames in which they’ll be mounted. Sounds like a lot of work, I guess I’d better get started soon, starting with where to find the best deal on lenticular sheets and interlacing software. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

It’s so common it’s a cliche: game geeks’ girlfriends and wives never get any action. For some ridiculous reason, video games are all too frequently more compelling to this dork set of society than their partner’s jubblies. JennyLC Chowdhury, an Interactive Telecommunications grad student at NYU, has created a possible solution to this problem with what she calls, “Intimate Controllers”: game controllers built into underwear, so that games are played through players physically touching one another.

Says Chowdhury,

I made a pong controller that was made from a bra. The mapping for the controller was simple – touching the left breast made the pong paddle go left and the right breast made the paddle go right….I wanted to create a type of video game play that would center around a couple’s intimacy and where two people would touch each other in order to play the game.

It’s a neat idea, but if you’re a button masher, she’d better be into rough sex.

I’d like to say that I’m all about art, neat gadgets, and fine cuisine, but the truth is I’m still stuck in sopho-moronic sex, drugs, and rock and roll phase. [may not be a "phase"] Nevertheless, here’s a nifty invention that does take me a step in the aforementioned direction: The Chork.

Combining the basic idea of chopsticks and the functionality of a fork, chorks are the brainchild of California college of the Arts graduate andf modernist furniture designer, Laura Rittenhouse. She crafts them out of various hardwoods, but she names them things like “Catalox, ” which is a kind of magnesium alloy, so your guess is as good as mine if that means oak or teak or whatever.

Based out of San Luis Obispo, Rittenhouse charges $17 per chork, $30 for two, and the deals get better with more orders. The story you tell yourself when ordering these is that you’re paying a premium to be able to eat with art, which is kind of compelling when you think about it. And if you eat sushi with them, you’re eating art with art, which I really don’t believe is overkill.

If the only thing you know of comic books are superheroes and the movies based on them, you’re missing out: some of the best stories being told today are being told through comics. (Some personal favorites over the last few years include Promethia, Fables, Y: The Last Man, and Walking Dead, just to give you a few fairly mainstream examples.)

Tomorrow is “Free Comic Book Day,” one of the comics industry’s best ideas in a while: find your local comic book shop, pop in, and walk out with several free comics to whet your fiction buds. Sure, it’s the “first hit is free” school of marketing, but that’s a great way to sample some ongoing titles to see what you like. If you haven’t read any comics in years, I think you’ll be surprised how mature and creative (some of) the industry has become.
