Modest Gifts: Sheepskin Moccasins
Posted in: Clothes
Susie bought me a pair of these Whistler Moccasins from Sheepskin.com last winter. Despite the initial dispersal of flattery I felt when opening a 13-inch-long box labeled “Sheepskin,” they’re probably one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten.
First off, they’re warm as hell—real wool will do that—so skip these if you live in areas given to mild winters. And the rubber soles, which I first thought would make them uncomfortable, are great for making quick runs downstairs to pick up packages or to head out on the balcony for a fast smoke.
Now don’t get me wrong: They’re ugly and a far, bleating cry from stylish. But you don’t make slippers out of the inverted skin of an animal and expect to deviate too far from the standard form.
At $46 a pop they aren’t cheap, but they’ve held up extremely well over the last year—and I’ve worn them nearly every day. (Just be sure to pick up some of the special shampoo to give them an occasional wash.)
I thought they were a really silly gift—a gift for an old man!—but now I wouldn’t want to lounge without them.
