Pet Insurance

I grew up on and around farms, so my conception of dog care has changed quite a bit over the years as I’ve slowly transformed into a snotty, East Coast liberal. I mean, first I dress my bulldog Porter up in a humorous, humuilating tuxedo—you know, just for laughs—and the next thing you know I’m eyeing matching polo shirts for our walks through the park.
When a farm dog gets sick, he might be lucky to get a shot of pig penicillin; if he’s seriously hurt, he’ll be put down. What need is there for dog insurance?
Porter and his constant, pure-bred health issues have already cost me several hundred dollars—and he’s a relatively healthy young dog. If you’d asked me a few years ago if I’d ever get insurance for a dog I’d have laughed. Now I’m considering it.
Here’s the meat: VPI (Veterinary Pet Insurance), the predominant pet coverage provider, quoted me a rate of $23 a month for their “Superior Plan,” which includes up to $14,000 a year in coverage. They also are trying to push an $8.25 “Vaccination and Routine Care Coverage” that includes reimbursement for things like heartworm testing and physicals.
With the optional coverage, I’d be spending about $1,500 over the next four years to keep The Slug covered. I’m considering it.
Has anyone else had any experience with VPI specifically?
