Mac and Cheese with the Gipper

Posted in: Food

Hands down, Macaroni and Cheese must be one of the world’s greatest comfort foods. A few years back Carolyn and I decided to look for the “Greatest Mac and Cheese recipe of all time.” While I’m not sure this White House Kitchen recipe is the one, it was good enough that we stopped looking! You have to think the fatty plate of cheddar-smothered pasta President Ron sat down to after a hard day of demanding Gorby tear down that wall is gonna be good.

We’ve been using the recipe for several years. It certainly beats the heck out of a box of Kraft. You can be pretty sure the White House kitchen has clue.

While considering what recipe to include here, I remembered reading a newspaper article that said that President Ronald Reagan liked to celebrate his birthday by having his favorite dinner — macaroni and cheese…Wondering what recipe he enjoyed, I telephoned the Ronald W. Reagan Presidential Library and Museum bookstore and asked whether they knew anything about the macaroni and cheese recipe. Without hesitation, they told me about The White House Family Cookbook by executive chef Henry Haller and Virginia Aronson.
