Roller Derby: Girls Really Can Do Everything Better

Sometimes a tip comes in that is so well-formed that I don’t even have to edit it. This one, from Frankenbike, is one of them:

I noticed that fighting is this weeks theme. I also noticed that there isn’t one thing about the new wave of all-women’s roller derby.

Wherever you are in the country, chances are there’s a flat track roller derby league nearby. In LA and Austin there are the only two women’s banked track leagues, The LA Derby Dolls and Lonestar Rollergirls.

A lot of bars around the country are showing an LA Derby Dolls game in HiDef Oct 20 at 10pm EST: http://www.hd.net/op_sports.html. [HDNet has a sports bar finder. -Ed.]

These aren’t the phoney, staged games of the 70s. The women play to win, play by rules, nothing is staged. And did I mention they wear short skirts?

Two of my favorite things: drinking and watching women in short skirts on wheels knocking the crap out of each other.

Don’t forget Rollergirls, the documentary series from A&E (and from the producers of Laguna Beach!), which followed the girls of the Austin TXRD league.
