Japanese Forza 2 Custom Car Designs

If you just look at these user-made screenshots from the Xbox 360 game Forza Motorsport 2, you might not realize why they are so cool—putting a fancy paint job on a videogame car isn’t exactly difficult, you could presume. But the thing about these cars is that Forza 2 doesn’t let you upload graphics into the game to be used, instead requiring you to use a palette of “primitives,” a library of pre-selected shapes that can be layered on top of each other. So when you see an anime girl graphic on the front of these cars owned by Japanese Forza players, they didn’t just upload a graphic into the game and slap it on. They created each one by hand by selecting the right shapes out of the library and layering them over and over until they created the graphic they wanted.

Even cooler, the new Forza has an auction system that lets you sell your customized cars to other players, which is the primary thing I intend to do in the game. Something about creating really intricate designs using a limited set of tools really makes the OCD kid in me happy. It’s why I’d much rather make an approximate model in Lego than create a perfect simulacrum in a model. (Not that one is better than the other.)

There’s a whole gallery of designs available at NDrifters.net. I can’t wait to get back to my Xbox and start making my own. (And yes, I realize I’ve been talking about Forza 2 quite a bit, but I’ve just been so pumped up. I don’t own a car anymore, so this is as good as it gets for me.)
