Toolmonger’s Top 5: The Week in Tools

Posted in: DIY, Gadgets

chuck_week.jpgThis week we exposed our apparently voyeuristic nature, passing on a link to the New Yankee cam, which lets you watch Norm Abrams and crew build those sweet wood projects in real time – mistakes and all. Beware, though: you might find yourself as addicted as we are. We also checked out a set of steel engineer’s squares – perfect for squaring a power saw blade before cutting – that ships in a wooden display case for $30 and would make a great gift, a two-LED work light that replaces the bezel on your Dremel rotary tool, requiring no batteries as it generates power from the tool’s rotation, and a K-bar-looking garden trowel that’s sure to scare the crap out of the neighbors. Our personal favorite, though: a “flatback” tape that eschews the curve that makes normal blades “stand out” in favor of a flat blade that wraps easily around curved furniture and is much easier to mark accurately since the tape lays directly against the item you’re measuring. Don’t miss this week’s One Beer Project where we walk you through balancing your A/C system for summertime.
