Cougars Attain Higher Profile

CBS News has just published an article profiling “cougars”, the popular name given to the kind of mature women who are on the prowl for younger men. It’s an intriguing state of the dating union. The fact that the term and what it represents has now become network newsworthy kind of gives the phenomenon a stamp of socially acceptable validation.

Throughout much of recorded history it has always been acceptable within most dominant cultures for older men to chase or wed younger women, but only in the very recent days has the reverse been as equally approved. Even in the permissive culture of the ’60s, older women/younger men hookups were still viewed as taboo, as noted in the article when referencing The Graduate’s infamous affair between Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft (who was actually only six years older than Hoffman at the time).

However, in the wake of Demi and Aston being thoroughly old hat at this point, the negative stigma once attached to cougars and their practices is equally outdated. Younger men being seduced by mature women is a thing now celebrated and revered, inasmuch as the young men in question are often simply used and discarded. But with the arrival of such websites as UrbanCougar.com, to say nothing of the myriad MILF sites available, it’s highly doubtful that the young men mind being used.

How pervasive is this phenomenon, and how new is it, really? Surely this sort of thing has been happening all along, but only in the recent age has it become so openly talked about and profiled. Is it due more to the vitality, visability, and self-posession of today’s modern woman, or to the ever present lust in men’s hearts for any kind of tail, and this is but the latest meat on the menu, thus a newsworthy novelty?

The answer seems obvious: while there are certainly cougar hunters, these men who seek out older available women to bed, the power clearly belongs to the cougars themselves. Let them have it, their time is long in the coming; allow the men become the prey for a change. I’m forced to admit that it’s kind of nice to be the piece of meat once in a while, don’t you think?
