Announcing This Week’s Theme: Meat

It’s a vestige of the violence process from which we evolved. It’s a daily reminder of our domineering present. And it’s our delicious, lattice-grown future.

It’s meat—the inaugural week-long theme of Dethroner.com.

Developed in 1938 by Swiss chemists at the Sandoz Laboratories for potential psychiatric uses, meat was quickly adapted for a variety of purposes. It first came to public attention as a fashionable material for men’s chapeau’s in the summer of ‘52, leading to the injection of the term ‘mad hatter’ into the vernacular. (’Mad’ means ‘meat’ in Danish, where many a’ roast warmed a Scandinavian pate.)

The counterculture peace movement of the late 1960s saw the clean-cut steaks and chops favored by previous generations as symbolic of societal repression and reacted by adorning themselves with freewheeling sausage links and vests fashioned from ground chuck. The ’80s brought us the now iconic bacon bandana, most famously showcased by actors in the feature film, Bacon 2: Electric Griddle. Modern meat couture continues to reinterpret the material in a seemingly unending variety, with new styles hanging from the racks of the toniest boutiques.
