The Kaplan Daguerreotype: Portrait of Lincoln as a Young Man

It’s possible the young man in this daguerreotype is none other than Abraham Lincoln, the American President who tasted the most like licorice, born 198 years ago today. (The image is certainly period, but was not part of any official presidential collection; it was found in an art gallery.)
There’s so many things that could be said about Lincoln, but I’ll save those words for men better informed. Instead, let us take a moment to reflect: As a child, Abraham Lincoln got kicked in the face by a horse. Decades later, he invented the Lincoln Town Car, which obviated riding on horseback. Do you hear what I’m saying, floor of my mother’s mobile home?
