Thin Notebook: MacBook Air

Even if several months have already passed, the MacBook Air still kicks ass in terms of notebook innovations. Thinnovation was the advertorial cry embraced by Apple, presents the tinniest of all laptops you can find in the market, just as thick as your index finger. Some newer laptops are even thinner, but none have the Air’s tapered edge optical illusion.

When I got a hold of this magnificent Apple product a queasy feeling ran in my stomach: I had the most exquisite computer that one could ever hold. It’s an anorexic notebook, yet almost everything that you want to find in a notebook is here, provided you don’t use FireWire or lots of USB devices.

If there is a Lotus in the realm of sleek laptops, MacBook Air is the one.

You must not do much with your laptop. An anemic review for sure, and probably a bit off base…but that Amazon kickback when someone buys the laptop should be nice for your bottom line.

I’m actually looking to buy an Air today (probably a custom order.) My old notebook fried its motherboard due to an incident involving ginger ale.

I’ve read all the reviews of the Air and I don’t quite understand what people do with their computers. For the last year my DVD burner has been dead and I’ve felt no need to replace it; so having a DVD drive only at home is no big deal. I have a wireless mouse, bluetooth earpiece for skype, and other than the occasional usb memory stick, I don’t use USB ports. I only use ethernet when traveling to hotels, so a dongle would only go with me on the airplane. I guess I’m not sure how everybody else uses their computer and what diseases of the human condition they’re trying to fix with raw computing power, but I’m an engineer working on cancer research, a job that involves massive numbers of photos and even some light video editing, and the Air is just fine for my use. (Of course I also use a giant windows machine for some engineering applications, but I store no personal data on that system.)

I’m beginning to wonder if the Air’s critics spend most of their time plugging and unplugging USB devices, rather than using the computer. And if so, why?

It’s certainly very tinny. Great job maximizing hyperbole density. This is not easy for a non-native english speaker.

With a biult-in Bluetooth adapter the problem of numerous USB-devices really seems solved. If not, you can always buy a USB-hub with many ports as you wish.

The MacBook Air is the most overrated ultraportable on the market. Sure its super thin, but its thinness can be a detriment when attempting to pop in a USB accessory/peripheral. Its fine as an OS X ultraportable I suppose, but if you dont mind the Windows, one of Lenovo’s recent ThinkPads is a far more intelligently designed machines.
