Flip Ultra – I Bought One and Share Someone Elses Video Review

I just don’t know! Do I want a good video recorder to take video of the baby, or not? I have a DV cam and we’ve hardly used it in the last 5 years. I have it hooked up for skype in the livingroom with a USB PolyCom and the big LCD.
I looked at the Xacti, I considered the Canon HV-20. I decided to go the very most simple route and see if I even enjoy grabbing simple video with the kid. Something she can stick in her mouth and I won’t freak out if she slobbers on. Someone recommended the Flip Ultra and it sounded perfect. Nothing but a record button really and the magic words low light. Supposedly the Flip and the newer Ultra are both excellent low light cameras! That alone makes it interesting. For $140 on Amazon, how could I go wrong.
Also — a big factor in this order for me (Joel keeps telling me I’m an idiot for buying this) is the $40 Under Water Housing. I’ll be trying it on a dive very soon. 30ft not great, but I’ve seen these clear housings in deeper water, the buttons tend to get less than functional. I’ll be careful and try not to flood it.
Then I saw this review and knew the Flip Ultra had to be mine.
I am mesmerized by the fact he doesn’t move his head only his eyes
MULLET! I like that he spends a minute on each of the five features the thing has, especially how the batteries fit in.
Greatest tech review ever! Pogue could learn a thing or two from this guy.
We’re in the same position as you – is the camera any good?
Craig — short form, yes – ease of use and picture quality are in-line with what I expected for $140. There are some issues with the software and codec it came with, but easily correctable once someone else told me what to do. I’ll write it up and share later today/tonight. I need to get some video off the decide that isn’t just my kid (or maybe I’ll just use what I’ve got…)
