How Inexpensive Suits are Made

Esquire.com is running a short piece on Singaporean tailor who can turn out custom designer knock-off suits for about $600 a pop. And his employees seem to make a pretty fair wage, too, albeit not what would be paid to Saville Row cutters and sewers. [Esquire.com]

Clearly, suit-buyers live in a different world than I do. As far as I’m concerned, $600 buys me an expensive suit!

You can get the same thing done in China for less. Walked away with a set of knock-off suits, a bunch of custom fitted shirts and a very nice cashmere overcoat. Nothing cost me more than $100.

Don’t expect the things to last forever but for a college student it lets me be a lot better dressed at job interviews and suchlike than if I was wearing something off the rack.
