Food That Time Forgot: Canned Bacon

Before it was popped open, its insides splayed out for the world to see, this was one of the last known samples of Canned Sliced Bacon (Product of Hungary). This particular can was about twenty years old, but the bacon inside was still as fresh as a New Jersey breeze.

absolutely horrifying.
I didn’t think there was a line I wouldn’t cross for bacon…until now.
Ooh, ooh, does anyone know where I can get some canned bacon—preferably not 20 years old. I have fond memories of having it on camping trips as a kid. Bring back canned bacon!
Oh yeah! I remember this from my boy scouting days. We often took canned bacon because it didn’t have to be refrigerated. The only place that we could get it was at K-mart — what does that tell you?
After you opened the can, you’d find the bacon wrapped in paper. The paper was completely saturated in lard and could be a real asset in starting your campfire.
K-mart also had little cans of Danish ham that weren’t too bad. And of course, we also made good use of Spam!

I STILL HAVE AN UNOPENED CAN WITH THE KEY ON THE BOTTOM AND THE ORIGINAL PRICE TAG STILL AFFIXED. WOULD BE WILLING TO SELL IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT. LOOKING FOWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU
That was absolutely the best bacon I ever tasted! It did have an unusual brownish color. So glad you showed the pictures.
As an advertising/brand enthusiast, I love the brand name: Celebrity.
Implies that the bacon is made from a celebrity. It’s a product of Hungary, and hungry…hungry Boy Scouts, evidently.
as a kid in saranac lake new york this was the best bacon you could get and very cheap as the locals did not know what it was.if it is still made please post where i can get it .
Someone please let me know if anyone still makes a canned bacon. I truely
did thank that the celeberty canned bacon was better than any bacon I have
eaten.
Thanks,
Barb.
The canned bacon is back – just under a different label and precooked this time; http://www.mredepot.com/servlet/the-364/Yoder%E2%80%99s-Celebrity-Canned-Bacon/Detail
30+ years ago, I use to buy canned bacon at a gourmet shop in McLean VA and I agree that it was the best tasting bacon ever. Wish they still sold it.
I fed my family on canned bacon for years. It was cheaper and good tasting, too. The brand I bought at the stupidmarket was from Denmark, as I recall. I haven’t seen any for years!
Kitkat- Ready Depot is located not too far from you in Winchester VA. They also carry canned hamburger and canned butter.
can celebrity bacon be bought at all anymore? it was a part of life at my home in alaska.
back when we went camping in the 70’s we always ate canned bacon where can we find it now?
Having fully cooked canned bacon is really beside the point. You can get fully cooked bacon anywhere; putting it in a can for $11 a pop is just an expensive marketing gimmick. While I appreciate the thought, canned bacon should be uncooked, packed in that globby, greasy salt concoction, and wrapped in wax paper with a key attached to the top of the can for opening. The bacon should be made from Danish pork bellies: nice and lean, with wide strips. DAK used to be the best canned bacon, with Celebrity a distant second (although when DAK stopped making it, we bought Celebrity because it was the only other brand out there)
My Grandfather sold imported foods and we grew up on this. VERY greasy and VERY salty , but it would be fun to try another can for the memories.
Well here is the latest on all you celebrity canned bacon fans. You need to go to Europe. The only USA import company that ever sold or imported this bacon is Celebrity Foods aka Atalanta Corp. in Elizabeth New Jersey 908-351-8000 – I actually spoke to the gentleman that did the ordering of this bacon and all imports of this item was stopped more than 5 yeras ago completely. No more to Alaska or whatever anyone tells you. Sorry guys. I loved it too. Oh, and as for that BS company ‘Yoder’ it is nothing like the celebrity. It is not salt/smoke cured -its precooked with artificial smoke flavor. Its garbage. They compare themselves as the same but do not waste your money.
oh and to date there is no other company ion the US that sells canned bacon. xcept the fakey cooked Yoder
I grew up with Celebrity bacon. My mother made a Hungarian dish and we’d use a whole can of it and it was the most flavorful bacon imaginable. I wish I could still buy it in the U.S. I used my last can a few days ago and it was definately over 20 years old. My mother bought it at KMart and a whole case of cans moved to different continents whenever I moved. If anyone can find a comparable substitute, please publish where it can be found.
That bacon rocked. Sometimes you had to wash some of the salt off or you’d swell up if you ate much of it but it tasted like real country bacon.
That’s too bad about the Yoders being fully cooked and not real cured.
Wish the real thing was still available.
I loved that stuff!!!! We took it camping, we would open it up and rinse it off then use the wax paper inside to start the fire with. Iam trying to find some canned bacon now It was the best Bacon I ever had.
I’m just about ready to add a can to our homemade beans, I have 3 cans minus 1 my mom and dad always had the bacon. This is tha last of it. We love it!!
It would be nice to have it back in stock.
truly, a Celebrity Sliced Bacon fan

I loved the smell of canned bacon cooking on a coleman stove. the thought takes me back to camping in upper penisula michigan as a kid.
Yes, I called up Celebrity Food number in NJ in 2005 when I was in Iraq. They told me they no longer imported the canned bacon.
There was tons of bacon at the dining facilities on base in Iraq, but that was cooked for you. I wanted something I could cook myself – makes me feel almost like I’m home.
The new Yoders canned bacon is nice if all you wanted was the bacon.
The Celebrity product was nice because you still had to cook it to your liking and the rendered lard could be used for other cooking and adding flavor to other dishes.
Yoders, you might as well buy the pre-cooked bacon in sealed bags by Hormel! Just ready to eat. No fun in that!
I’m just about ready to add a can to our homemede beans, I have 3 cans,
minus one now.My Mom and Dad always had the Bacon. It’s great in beans.
It would be nice to stock up on it again!

That is interesting if it is one of the few remaining cans – We have about 4 or 5 cans in the basement of my parents’ house. I took a can backpacking with me last year!
