I think the difference is independent of the brand/no brand axis. Brooks Brothers used to sell both - with and without their logo - same price. I am beginning to suspect that one pays more for better-made garments sans logo - there being value attached to the absence of advertising.

		<description>Having worn both kinds (country and western) of polo, upper and lowercase, I find the RL polos to be a superior shirt to say, gap or old navy polos or the ones my company makes me wear to company functions.  They fit better and are sturdier, imho. The benefit of the horsey is that you don't look quite so much like a T-Mobile Kiosk Cowboy . . . .</description>
