Actually, I was curious enough to ask the opinion of a friend of mine who is a parole officer. She said she agreed with everything in the piece 150%. She also said, regarding guards:

“The prison guards develop a close repor with the prisoners. Partly because most of the prison guards were/are on the same social/economical level as the prisoners themselves (CO’s only make about ten bucks an hour and you only need a GED to become one) the other reason they get a long with them so well is because..in the event of trouble, those prisoners will have that *cool* guards back in a second.
There are asshole guards (the *goon squad* they call em)who are on an intimidation power trip and they get no respect by their coworkers or by the prisoners. if you want to be respected..you have to respect everyone including the prisoners. For the most part (and I always tell parolees this..except sex offenders of course) the only difference between me and them is that they got caught.”

Prison isn’t a rape fest, but piss off the wrong people, and you can get jumped in the shower.

Not everyone gets along, there are still societal segregations, but everyone hates the guards.

I don’t know… I think I have to call bullshit. At least partially. Crips playing cards with Nazis? Really? And more unbelievable than that - being locked up fucks you up more than being raped? How would he know, since he was never raped?
