ryanseacre_devan_5055884_400.jpgTMZ is slowly becoming my new goto source for football news. They are reporting that Ryan Seacreast is in talks to take charge of the pre-game and half-time shows at the upcoming Super Bowl in January on Fox (obviously). Yes, Ryan Seacrest, American Idol’s one and only cupcake, who regularly crushes the souls of aspiring singers (and their unborn babies) will be the glistening face behind the biggest and manliest sporting event of the year.

If watching the Super Bowl wasn’t already a pain in the ass, this may be the final nail in the coffin.

Are You Ready for some Football … with Ryan? [TMZ]

My affection for American Idol has already been made abundantly clear on this blog, but I am going to take it one step further: I think Ryan Seacrest is pretty good as a host. I know that’s not the highest mountain to climb, but I’m just saying.

I understand why Fox went in this direction, but I think they went a little too far. You need someone who attracts new fans without alienating your core audience.

Dennis Miller (presumably available, since he appears on Fox News) would have been a better choice.

Jimmy Kimmel (possibly not available any more) would have been better still.

Or let me borrow a page from Howard Cosell, who suggested at one point that Bill Cosby would be a perfect addition to ABC’s Monday Night Football telecast.

And if you’re going to go to American Idol for talent, why not Randy Jackson?
