From the Organic Consumers Organization:

Despite receiving more than ten thousand comments from consumers and family farmers opposing various aspects of a late May 2007 proposal, the USDA has approved a rule that will allow 38 new non-organic ingredients to be allowed in products bearing the “USDA Organic” seal.

The USDA’s passage of this proposal has resulted in the following:

-Anheuser Busch will be allowed to sell its “Organic Wild Hops Beer” without using any organic hops at all.

The bill is reported to have been sponsored by A-B, so it’s not like this is just some hypothetical example.

Yet another reason to stay as far away from Anheuser Busch products as possible. Viva la craft brew!

You guys are concerned that the contents in the bottle shouldn’t be labeled “organic”. I’m still opposed to their use of the label “beer”.

You get a hug for that comment.

this slaps the face of breweries whose entire process, and all ingredients, are certified organic, and have been for years. sigh.

    L’Emmerdeur=Legend.

Hey Joel, how about a rundown of some organic brews?

This is absolutely horrible that this is even being considered. I guess it’s a good thing that I buy a lot of my meats from local ranches.

I had a good long think on this issue. Seems like the government uses “private” rating agencies when they don’t want to be seen as enforcing morality. The ESRB and that thankfully-dead fascist scum Valenti and his MPAA farce are prime examples.

I say organic growers need to get organized and use some of the government’s own FDA-approved medicine on them, by creating a private rating label for which real organic products would apply. Sure they could have the bogus USDA seal as well, but those in the know would look for the private rating seal of approval to know it is really organic, and not “some bald lab-rat chemist in New Jersey’s Chemical Row took a shit in this here salad dressing, which makes it organic”.
