Pizza Fritta: The Other Deep-Fried Pie

“Deep-fried pizza” is a punchline; one I’m sure is delicious. But there’s more than one type of deep-fried pizza in the world besides the famous Scottish variety. (Which, as far as I know, basically takes a slice of already-cooked pizza, batters it, and fries it again.) Called a “pizza fritta,” it’s a Neapolitan street foot that takes the traditional Italian pizza—a simple crust, some tomatoes, and some cheese—and seals it with another layer of uncooked dough, which is then deep fried into something that reminds me of nothing other than a Hot Pocket.
FX Cuisine tracked down a small shop in Napoli and had a taste. It looks light and crispy, but they assure us it’s as greasy and delicious as any deep-fried anything should be.
