George, a Jack Russell terrier, died Sunday in New Zealand, when he lept to the defense of five children who were being threatened by two stray pit bulls, giving the children time to escape.
Richard Rosewarne (11), the oldest of the children, said the pitbulls came up behind them and were going for his brother Darryl Wilson (4).“George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him - one on the head and the other on the back.
“We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George.”
But nine-year-old George was so badly ripped apart he had to be put down.

Can I cry now? Geez.
What a good dog! Poor little thing. :(
George deserves a posthumous medal or knighthood. And a really spectacular funeral. That’s just amazing - and sad.
*Salutes George, the Heroic Jack Russell Terrier.*
Geez, what a shitty thing to happen to a good dog.
“But nine-year-old George was so badly ripped apart he had to be put down.”
Thats opposed to being only slightly ripped apart then?
RIP George.
Little terriers generally fulfill the saying “a big dog in a little dog’s body.” They think they’re big and strong enough to take on a pack of wolves. Or pitbulls in this case. A few Jack Russells and rat terriers in my neighborhood embody this description. They make me smile.
RIP, brave George.
That being said… as the owner of a lovely pit mix who lets small children climb all over her, I’m bracing myself for the “ban pitbulls” backlash. It’s up to owners to properly train and restrain their dogs, especially those that happen to be constructed to inflict serious injury.
Hi all,
As the Mum of the five children saved by George, thank you for your replies here. I was browsing the net for forums related to this and found these postings. If anyone is interested in seeing the Close Up video clip related to this story, that includes footage of George’s owner, a reenactment by my children of what happened as well as a good interview with a vetenarian who owns a Pitbull, you can view it here:

Anne, I understand how you feel. Although I lost my good friend George and could have have lost a child if it wasn’t for George, I do not believe all Pitbulls should be killed.
