The “Amazing Fly Gun” is pretty simple: a spring-loaded gun shoots a hard plastic “swatter” at flies and mosquitoes. The manufacturer claims it works very well and it’s not unpossible that it does; you don’t have to squash a fly to kill it, but just give it a solid enough smack that it is knocked out or killed in the air.
You can have one for your very own for as little as $7—and prices get cheaper the more you order. Or you could wait until these are available for a buck in Chinatown. ‘Tis the season.

so much more fun to use this instead http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/bug_zapper.html
it gives that satisfying pop when you get a bug. it grosses out the Mrs. but when I get a bug I feed it to my fish in the aquarium they love the fresh cooked bug meat.
also fun to hold a lit cig up to it. it gets all sparky.
These are really fun, but they have been around forever. It just goes to show how the net can revive something fun that not too many people knew about. My dad used to have a discount clothing store and we used to have other little impulse things there like sunglasses and hats and such, and just because they looked cool we ordered the Flyshooter once. They sold like hotcakes and we just kept getting them. That was back around 1980 (or there about). Man, I’m getting old!
These things are fun, but pretty useless against flies. However, the tennis racket job James mentioned works great, and you never have to deal with mess, just a sparky charred corpse that drops nicely into the toilet or the garbage can. Or, yes, into an aquarium. Plus, it kills in mid-air, whereas all the other swatting methods require the fly to be at rest on a wall or a window.
I used to have a pretty good little business selling these on the playground in third grade. 23 years ago?!? Yeah…these are new….
