DNA Tests for Dogs’ Breed

porterdna.jpgLike something out of a fantasy X-Treme Maury Povich Show, you can now run DNA tests on your dog for the surprisingly reasonable price for just $72. Why, might you ask, when the peanut butter appears to sit undisturbed on the shelf? Because you might want to lock down the history of your dog’s breed—as long as he or she is one of the 38 breeds able to be identified.

Swab the inside of your dog’s mouth, send it back via U.S. Mail, and get the full history of your dog’s breeding back in a (presumably) few weeks. Good perhaps for determining if a breeder ripped you off or if you should expect genetic health issues in your dog’s future. But hey, if it’s pure-bred, you don’t need a test to tell you that!

Lots of places (cities, apartments, etc.) have regulations or rules regarding specific breeds of aggressive dog breeds. My wife is a vet, and there are lots of times where a dog may be part “banned-breed” but they don’t look it, and until now there hasn’t been a way to prove it. This will come in very handy.

Also, out dog is a rescue dog mutt….she looks part chow, part lab, part shepherd….maybe. We’d like to know what she really is.

I’ve heard there’s another test that’s supposed to have up to 100 dog breeds (http://www.marsveterinary.com/faq.aspx#3), but it doesn’t seem to be as straightforward as this one. Here’s hoping the mail-in one can improve to better accuracy!

Agree on the Vizsla comment! That’s what I would like to verify!
