Men’s Journal’s Top 25 Beers in America

Men’s Journal has updated their “25 Best Beers in America” list after a two-year hiatus. Dethroner favorite “60 Minute IPA” from Dogfish Head takes a well-deserved second-place slot, which makes me all the more curious to try the number one selection, “Walker Pale Ale” from Firestone.
Brewed with gentle British bittering hops and finished with American cascade hops (the same stuff that makes Sierra Nevada smell like pinecones), Firestone Walker combines the subtlety of a British ale with the fragrant bite that Americans weaned on microbrews have come to expect. The Burton Union oak barrel system, a Rube Goldbergian row of linked barrels that churn the fermenting brew through wood while it’s coming of age
A sample of the list, from first to fifth: Firestone “Walker Pale Ale”; Dogfish Head “60 Minute IPA”; Stoudt’s eponymous “Pils”; Russian River “Temptation Ale”; and Avery “Mephistopheles’ Stout.” I’ve been hearing so much good stuff about Russian River, but I still haven’t had a chance to sample any. I’m getting set in my beer ways, which means it’s time to get out there and try some new stuff. I’ll be in San Francisco for a day next week; perhaps Toronado has some of these West Coast standouts on tap.

no miller lite?
I have heard many good things about Russian River’s lineup as well. I am also pleased to see an entry from Avery on that list.
Great Lakes is the SHIT!!! Thank you.
Wow, I can’t believe there was nothing from Three Floyds on this list. Their Alpha King is quite seriously one of the best pale ales I’ve ever tasted.
Otherwise, good list! Sadly, I haven’t tried many of the more regional beers on it, but those I’ve had, I’ve enjoyed.
I haven’t had a lot of those but I have had the Firestone.
It’s as delicious as they say. Great news to see that it’s on top of the list.
That Hennepin is also delicious but it makes for the bad fartys.
mmm… Dogfish Head 60 Minute, it’s my #1 daily drinker.
Everyone has their favorites, but any “top beers” list that excludes Anderson Valley’s Boont Amber is immediately suspect.
Anderson Valley makes some surprisingly good beer. Their IPA is damn tasty.
I always find non-PNW pales to be cloyingly sweet or trying too hard (Dogfish Head, I’m looking at you). I tried the Firestone pale last night and its very nice, easy, balanced… Not sure its in the same league as some of my favorites, but the fact that I can find this stuff in microbrew-starved L.A. makes me happy.
