Seriously, look at push-reel. My lot is .26 acres and takes 45-1hr to mow.

Are you assuming that the electricity used to charge this thing wasn't itself created by burning fossil fuels?

That's an interesting idea I've never really thought about. As I am looking to buy my first house (and hopefully a medium/decent sized yard!), what *are* the options out there for more environmentally friendly mowers? I'll have to look into something the one mentioned here, but we're also probably looking at something where we'd need a riding lawn mower. What kinds of things are out there for bigger mowers/tractors/yards that wouldn't cost as much gas-wise?

I have a relatively small yard with few trees, so I got an electric mower with a cord. I much prefer it to the gas mowers I used growing up. It's quieter, it's lighter, it starts and stops immediately, there's no exhaust, and I don't have to deal with gas or motor oil. Since it has a cord, I don't have to charge it and I won't have to replace expensive batteries.

I bought a used Scotts Classic push reel mower on craigslist for $40.

It takes me no time at all to mow my cul-de-sac sized lawn, certainly no more time that it would take with a ICE mower.

Almost silent, easily pushed around, and doesnt spew cut grass at your feet. I cut the lawn in my sandals.

Oh, and it is a better cut- nice and clean, not ripped like the other mowers. I highly recommend it.

Growing up my dad hated gas powered yard tools. Our mower and leaf blowers were electric, and we always trailed cords around behind us. We had too many trees to adequately grow grass, but the blower was used to lug give or take 800lbs of leaves to the curb every year. The cords never got in the way, but I could coil 100ft of extension cord without tangles by the time I was 7.

i've had one of these for about 3 years now. it's an amazing machine. it's insanely quiet. the battery has a built in handle, so you can quickly swap it out for a second charged one if you're mowing a big lawn. it's significantly lighter than other battery powered models out there. it does have a narrow cutting path, but i would highly recommend one if it fits your needs.

A long time ago, in the eighties, my family had an electric mower. It had a cord. That was a bad idea.

Yeah, Rye, the hydrogen ICE is a great idea and may yet prove to save our collective bacon...when they finally decide to put enough emphasis upon R&D. The market may steer the industry if we manage to send a strong enough message to the power mongers that we want to get away from fossil fuels. Like everything else, it starts at home.

I also agree that people need to be made aware of how to properly dispose of battery cells, and I'd like to think that municipalities will make this easier for the consumer in the years to come. Paper, plastic, glass, metals, batteries. Would it be so hard to sort them each out as we go?

Dilithium crystals....mmm....now I want to blow shit off and go watch me some Trek.

I think you're taking your internal combustion engine argument a little far. While I agree that the use of gasoline as a combustible is a regrettable reality of the world we live in today, the internal combustion engine can be much more cleanly operated using a far less controversial element, that being Hydrogen, which is also, you will note, a combustible.
Hydrogen Internal combustion Engines also do not suffer from having to replace and discard their batteries which typically leak their harmful chemical components into our ground water.
I understand that these aren't on the market quite yet and at present your best bet, in terms of environmentally sound grass clipping, is most likely an electric, but the internal combustion engine is a piece of technology that will be with us for a long time . . . or at least until we unlock the prophesized powers of Dilithium Crystals.
