Jackie Chan has nothing on this guy, except several million dollars and international fame; Makoto Nagano, on the other hand, is a humble crab fisherman.

The clip is a little long but stick with it. At first you’re thinking, “aw, hell, I could do that,” but by the end you’ll be stunned by this man’s athleticism, focus, and determination. I’ll admit that my eyes got a little bit misty when he makes the final obstacle goal.

Bear in mind that he’s only the second man to complete the entire course in ten years. And then realize that a US Olympiad took this challange and blew it in the second course.

    why do asians get this
while i am exposed to survior/elimidate/moneysexbuy douchebags

    def. not fair

Its all about the law, can you even imagine that show, or MXC on Spike, being played out in the United States, the injuries that are sustained in those shows must be horrendous. It would be like a lawsuit wonderland if those shows ever made it to the US.
But I agree, it is definately not fair, we have just as many inbred degenerates per capita as most asian countries.
    Boo!!!

There are a few of these kind of competition/TV shows in Japan. I love them and watch them whenever they’re on.
Here is the wikipedia article on it.

Nagano is phenomenal!! I have a Season Pass to Ninja Warrior (G4, Channel 354 on DirecTV), and I always find myself pulling for him. He is incredibly impressive, along with others that compete on the show.

I Fiannly saw Makoto Beat the final stage tonight. Wow, this guy is amazing! He earned it, and i was happy to see him win. He is a really great guy and is a very good sportsman,

    BTW

I believe they have had 3 US Olympiad’s go on the show. Each failing in the 1st, 2nd and then the 3rd stage.

It’s to bad we don’t have games like this in the states. Where the average person could get on tv. Not to mention how maybe more people would would try to stay in shape.
    Mokoto is awsome!!!!

Nagano rules! Three U.S. Olympians — Paul Hamm, Morgan Hamm, and Paul Terek — did try the course, and all failed far before the final stage.

My 8-year-old daughter prefers Shunsuke Nagasaki, the “Prince of the Trampoline,” but for now Nagano is the man.

We need more role models like Makoto Nagano. He is tough, hardworker, disciplined, and yet so down-to-earth. Where has he been all my life?!? He is certainly my kind of man. Heck, even my husband likes him. Makoto Nagano is not only a woman’s man, he’s also a man’s man. He’s just an all-around likable dude. We love you, dude!

Makoto Nagano is my favorite competitor, and I’m thrilled he won. In 19 competitions, only two people have ever won Ninja Warrior.

Nagano is many things, all of them wonderful, but he is not, as your site claims, a “humble crab fisherman.” Nagano is billed as the captain of a fishing vessel; nothing about crab is mentioned.

The first winner of NW was Kazuhiko Akiyama, who was the “humble crab diver.” (Diver, not fisherman.) Kazuhiko later gave up crab diving due to failing eyesight, but when he appeared on NW, he still carried the string of crabs, and he was still referenced as the crab diver. When Nagano won in # 17, Kazuhiko retired from NW.

Btw, by the time Nagano won, the Stage 4 Tower had been raised an additional 24 feet, but the time limit stayed the same! He’s amazing!

Lastly, what’s up with Channel G4? I record all the NWs, but I haven’t seen # 17 yet, when Nagano wins. I’ve only seen it in clips online! This month, there are several airings of NW, but none are # 17.

i love shunsuke nagasaki….hes cute!! but he is awesome at the sasuke tournament. i bet he’ll be Mr. ninja warrior next year. he rocks!!

  20. 20 juno

i thinkits kool but what do they win?

  21. 21 shavel

I enjoy seeing Makoto compete. He’s short in stature but is very competive and very cute.

  22. 22 shavel

How can i see this competition live?

  23. 23 Steve

The winner of NW gets 2 million yen (about $17K) and tons of fame, since the show is immensely popular in Japan. I’m sure that just opens the door though–it probably works a bit like athletes here, who make more in endorsements than they ever do playing sports (think Tiger Woods).

Rye is right though, a NW type show could never exist in this country with the prevalence of personal injury lawsuits. The closest thing I remember is the old Double Dare on Nickelodeon, but that was with kids and their obstacles were things like pulling a red flag out of a giant nose (with lots of fake green boogers).

I don’t think it’s about the law. I just don’t think anyone is willing to gamble on such a show being successful in the U.S.

Case in point look at the NFL. You’re gonna tell me that’s not just as dangerous? If somebody fails on Nagano Supreme (my name for the show) they fall harmlessely into water, no big deal. If American producers decided to put up dangerous metal spikes and someone got impaled…well then i can see a lawsuit.

But anyway if it comes to America only roid heads will compete and the integrity will be compromised…lol.

It’s a dream of mine to get on such a show though and i do think it would succeed here in America if done right. Essentially it ought to be a port of the same exact obstacle course. (Maybe start with an earlier incarnation and work your way up.)

Japanese fans shouldn;t be too concerend with us winning early and embarrassing them because our olympic gold medalists have already failed…

nagano is the best. handsome, agile, strong and tenacious. but, what is his role on viking and ninja warrior…more than a contestant. who knows? tell us. hate to taint his image but something feels fishy!

  26. 26 D

Nagano is a fisherman and an amazing athlete. He participates as a contestant only. He earned his way into our hearts with his tenacity and drive. Don’t try to taint his image by trying to imply that he has some sort of “role” on viking or ninja… he is a legit contestant just like the Nagasaki brothers, Yamada, Yamamoto, and Shiratori.

nagano has finshed all 4 stages?
