Vermont Secession

From the sound of this article, it sounds like Vermont is a lot more likely to leave the Union than I ever realized. Wishful thinking by the authors? They have some interesting poll numbers, at least. [Washington Post]

This is exactly how I feel forty-eight times a day. But, because I’m a Southerner, if I started saying anything about secession I’d get called a racist prick or something. *Sigh*, damnable history.

Ummmm, that’s a little odd, but the dateline for that article is April 1. I assume it’s a parody for the holiday? If it really is serious, well then good luck to them.

Seriously, any talk of secession in this day and age would be nothing short of ridiculous. We speak of a global economy, but that is nothing compared to the national economy. Logistically it would be crazy and impossible for a state to separate from the rest, plus bring about everything that comes with it. How much money does each state depend on in the form of federal help? How would a single state go about it’s business on it’s own?

Really, what would a state gain by dissolving it’s union with the rest of the states, other than fulfilling some sort of narcissistic egoism dream?

As a Vermonter, I can tell you that these people are serious (perhaps the Washington Post was playing a prank on them by publishing the article, however.) I personally think it’s a terrible idea for a number of reasons that I won’t go into here, but there’s a movement in the state secession. Here’s some more info, if you want to read up on it or want proof that this isn’t a prank. http://www.vermontrepublic.org/

It’s clearly a parody, though a well-written one. There is no way that Dean ran for President after pushing a movement to secede without that having become a major torpedo to sink his campaign.

And while, secession may not be practical, the states rights versus federal rights balance is clearly an issue that will need to be addressed in the next few decades. The original conception of our government relied heavily on the centralized federal government not being able to exert undue control over the state governments. Since WWII we’ve swung very far away from that notion of federalism – and it’s unclear if our government can function properly in that paradigm.

It’s just a stupid idea, can you imagine how quickly they would go down the drain. I’m so tired of that crap, we live in a Democracy, if you don’t like the guys in charge you get to vote for new ones later, you don’t just up and secede because you didn’t get your way, how juvenile, I can just picture all the people in Vermont throwing themselves on the floor and flailing away with their arms and legs in a tantrum. Democracy does not equal my way or the highway.

Sorry to say but this isn’t an April Fool’s joke. For more on SVR and its ties to the racist neo-Confederate movement, including the notorious League of the South, visit http://vermontsecession.blogspot.com/

(Editor: If possible, please add to my first post)

The “poll” mentioned in the article written by SVR members turned out to have been bought and paid for by SVR and is not a true UVM poll. The manner of questioning is problematic in that it was conducted in such a way as to produce a response bias.
