How many push-ups can you do? Apparently I can do four before my trembling peg arms buckle under my malty torso. I challenge you to a spot check.

I’ve been working on pushups again for the past two weeks. I went from being able to do 5 at a clip to 30

my goal is 100
do? probabaly 60-80, maybe a bit more.
But I only do 45-60 a week as part of my chest/triceps workout.
I started doing push-ups again about three weeks ago. I think a good way to get the count up is to alternate speed. One day I’ll try for maximum repetitions (which means going quickly), the next day I won’t really worry about reps and will go through the push-up in slow motion. It sounds dumb, but it really improves control and endurance.
I can do 30 before burning out and I agree with AP, changing your speed helps with the endurance. If I try to “power push up”, I’ll max around 20.
Funny you ask, I just posed the same question to my viewers here (complete with my response):

I can do 45 at a slow pace, might be able to do 50 if I go until I collapse. I havent seen how many I can bang out if I go quickly, and might get some strange looks at work if I just drop down in my cube.
I do a hundred in the morning before the shower and a hundred in the evening before bed. Its really not that hard, and doesn’t take that long, to build up the number you can do.
I can get 40 before I get winded. I’ll try again after I finish this beer.
I’m not sure how many; I do something push-up-ish as part of my yoga(*) routine, but it’s in slow motion:
1. Start in the “up” push-up position, back straight and arms completely vertical at shoulder width. Hold for a slow count of 3.
2. Lower yourself (keep that back straight!) over another slow count of 3.
3. Don’t hit the ground; when your upper arms have come into alignment with your torso, such that your elbows are right next to your ribs, stop and hold for another slow count of 3. You should be only a few inches off the ground, and your hands should be directly beneath your shoulders.
4. Let yourself touch the ground.
This is normally part of an extended sequence of movements and poses; it’ll be repeated several times, but with other stuff in between. If you try it or something similar, I think you’ll be pleased at how quickly you build muscle control and endurance.
(*) don’t laugh, it’s for regular guys (http://www.diamonddallaspage.com/yrg). Excellent workout.
I can do both of them
Wow, what a coincidence. This was my new-year’s resolution. As written on Jan 1, I wanted to increase my maximum number by 1 each day. Within the first week I had revised it to a set of rules:
1.) Any time I go to the bathroom at work, I have to do X number of pushups. (our restrooms are spacious, and have locks on the doors)
2.) X starts at 20 (my max as of jan 1), and goes up by 5 any time I can finish a set without collapsing at the end
3.) I get to skip the routine any time I’m sick, and also if I stay late.
This actually worked really well, I would do a deep set (all the way to the floor) the first time each day, and then the rest of the day I’d do shallow ones as quickly as possible. I was increasing on schedule, and hit 80 by mid-march. However, I haven’t improved since then because our office relocated and I have yet to find a good, private spot to do them at the new building. If only I could work up the courage to do it in my cubicle!
When I was in high school, I spent several months working my way up to 100, to impress my super-macho absentee dad. Once I reached my goal, I proudly let slip in conversation that oh, yes, by the way, I can do 100 pushups.
He responded “With which arm?”
I was crushed, and stopped doing them, and never went back to them until this year. Bastard.
5. Girl style. Shameful! Even worse, at no point in my life have I ever been able to complete a single pull-up. Funny, my arms don’t look like overcooked spaghetti… Oh well – it’s a fair trade for my vagina.
16 “boy pushups” before I took a few second break then did 4 more before the shaking was enough that I stopped (i’m at work today). I should start doing these again, I like being the buff chick, time for me to get back to my former glory.
I can do 2 sets of 30. I kick myself when I hear about all these people doing up to 100 pushups. I find it hard to believe, because I work out pretty hard, and can only get through 30 and then take a 5 minute break and then do another 25-30… Someone maybe upping there number a bit if they say they are doing 100!?! I’d be jealous if not…
I do 5 sets of 20 before going to sleep nightly, but I really need to work on bringing up the number of reps and lower the number of sets. I’d probably drop dead if I tried doing all 100 at once…
I DO 5 SETS OF 20 BEFORE GOING TO
SLEEP AND I GET PRETTY GOOD RESULTS.
I’m 34, and used to do 300 a night in reps of 25-30. Now that was 2 years ago, I got a Iron Gym this year, and man the pull up’s are the crushers. Wish I was 20 something again, but hey atleast I’m trying to get back into doing them nightly..
