This reminds me of a "This American Life" feature, in which a guy watches a reality show in which another guy who lives in his building is rejected for a crappy apartment. The really sad thing is that the rejected guy's apartment was a lot nicer than the watching guy's apartment. He gets depressed.

'“If I Can Make It There” is an interview with Jorge Just, an average-Joe who shares the hilarious experience of how his New York apartment that he had newly moved into had become the focal point of the TV show The Bachelorette, for the reason that the person who Jorge took over from was rejected on the show solely because of the apartment.' (Recap from: http://www.dailyvault.com/toc.php5?review=4606)

You can stream the episode, of which this story is the prologue, here: http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=233
