starkfossil.jpgOh goodness. I haven’t been bitten by the watch bug like some people, which is a bit odd considering how much I like my gadgets. I like my dials and whoops and whirs and calculators and solar panels as much as the next guy, but I hate spending more than a bill on a watch when the $10 timepiece from the grocery store does its job just as precisely. It’s like the difference between buying a Ferrari and a Honda, except the Honda happens to also do zero to sixty in four seconds.

(Someday I’ll write a post that doesn’t start with me noting what a cheapskate I am.)

But this watch, the “O-ring Digi” in white, is just too rad. The hour is displayed with a simple digital number on the right, while the minutes wind their way around like a regular analog piece. And it’s only $110! Someday I will have disposable income again and this will be mine.

I think Philippe Stark (the designer) often takes things a step too far towards simplicity, but this is just right.

really, watches at this point are just status symbols. at my desk right now, i can check the time on the OS, on the file management system, on my cell phone, and on my desk phone. even still, i wear the raymond weil watch that i got for graduation, mainly because it’s fucking beautiful.

In recent years, Stark has gotten pretty pretentious, imho. He used to do things like gnome side tables, but somewhere along the line he lost his sense of humor.

This is definitly on my watch list… a growing list I’m afraid! I bought a Stark watch just a few weeks back.. the black rubber banded model with orange “old-style” led number display. i love it, major conversation piece as virtually everyone who sees it asks what it is.

I love watches like these that stand out from the crowd. Its nice to have variation from the classic chronograph (but I still have one of course), or your typical classy looking dial watch (four…).. ok I have a problem :)

Starck definately has his quirkiness in design. His designs often appeared as a product that might or might not been thought of many designers but he sure made it happened! I often seek items that are rare and unique. As per James’s comment… it sure strike very interesting conversation from whoever sees it. It just simply implies that people are generally very inqusitive about what’s happening around us. I too have his black rubber orange L.E.D number display one and it is simply the most effective design i’ve ever encountered. It works as a band/bangle/bracelet (because i’m a female!)and a watch!!…. at least he (Starck) is thinking outside the box not that i don’t like conventional watches… i say.. anything interesting is good…
