Europe Today, USA This Fall: Men’s Hairstyles

It’s not that we’re necessarily fashion-backward in the States, it’s that we like to see the acid test fall on our European cousins first. We’re restrained, if anything. They originate, we innovate, and then next year Japan will elaborate upon the original model and take it to new heights (and lows, depending). Based on that maxim, Japanese men are going to be using a god awful amount of hairspray and gel and mousse soon, if Sandra Cantzler of the German Press Agency is to be believed.
Of this season’s male hairstyles, Cantzler reports that,
bangs…are an indispensable part of men’s current hairstyles. Men who want to be stylish are having their hair done like the musicians of the ’80s band Duran Duran. ‘Provocative and very masculine’ is how the central association of barbers characterizes the new looks.
Interesting. “Provocative” I can see, “masculine” must be German for “foofy.” I kind of don’t see it happening here, though it would be kind of cool if guys started having more fun with their hair, even just letting some grow for a change. I’m sick of the buzz cut—it was boring four years ago and it’s insufferable now. But that’s me, and I’m admittedly a straight fag.
What do you guys think? Are you prepared to work some New Waver hairdoo in a few months?

I’m decidedly against men who wear any hair product other than pomade.
luckily, i’m against women.
pomade is garbage :) too heavy on your hair, and too much build up… paste is where its at.
Then again, I have more hair product than my wife… and I spend much more buying the “good” stuff.
… i’m a nancy
hahah

German hair hasn’t changed since the 80s, it isn’t some sort of post millenium ironic statement but rather pure denial of fashion.
Kat: as should have been obvious, this was more about where the mainstream will be going shortly, not the effete Willimasburgian hipper-than-thou ilk. Of course this faction will always be a few steps fashion-forward…and looking retarded about 2/3rds of the time. That graced remaining 1/3rd, though, oo la la!
Pomade rules, though paste is great too. Even gel can be a good thing if you know how to use it and not come out looking like a Gotti.
i’m all about clay compound, personally. american crew is my fav.
Now that my buzz cut has grown out I tried “Garnier Fructis Surf Hair” a matte wax texture paste. Works great but it smells bad. Anybody know of unscented hair products?
You probably won’t find anything unscented, but if you stay away from the stuff you find in your local drugstore, you’ll probably find something that smells better. I had a friend who owned a beauty shop, and she swore by the stuff that this company makes:

I didn’t know Jon Bon Jovi was in Duran Duran… 2nd from the right…
HaHa I thought that was Jon Bon Jovi as well. Who new bangs were the new jam? There is a hair product for men that my old boyfriend used to use. I forget the name of it, but it looks old fashioned and it’s in an orange can. A lot of rockstars use it…
We’re restrained? Ha! We follow, yes. The only thing we do well and did first was the All American look now exploited by Abercrombie and Firtch. It came and saved us from our Cezar cuts and metro sexuals.
