What kind of kits or sponges do you usually used? Like the website http://sponge.strongwill.biz/ shows?
I think the one with absorbent material will be better. It can deal with the spot easier.

for f*ck's sake it's a car. washing is a waste of time and resources and has no bearing on its functional life. stop being such a dumb american and spend your time doing something useful.

Good tips! Especially with my wife's car, <a href="http://www.2dolphins.com/caliente.html" title="Dede's VW New Beetle Convertible "Calinet"" rel="nofollow">Caliente</a>, we follow almost those exact steps using Meguaiars liquid soap. We only ever use the brush in the stall for a quick scrub to the undercarriage areas and to scrub the rubber floormats since they have really deep grooves that are hard to get into with just a towel.

One additional step is that I use a long, tapered brush to scrub the interior portions of the wheels to remove brake dust and other gunk. I've found that getting that done during the wash makes the detailling after the fact go faster and is less of a mess.

Really, the time required is not too much more than you'd spend waiting at a car wash and with a little practice, you can thoroughly clean a car with less than $5 in quarters and a little elbow grease.

Great post. One exception -- high pressure spray isn't really great for getting the rinsed water to bead off. It's also not good for paint.

Some of those tips are excellent, but there is no way I would be able to implement all of them. I just don't have enough time or patience to put that much effort into ensuring a spot-free finish. Also, I live in the suburbs of Seattle, so no matter how spot-free you manage to get your paint, it will soon be rained on anyway.
