You seem a bit hostile James. That's a strong reaction. I would agree keeping it off is the important part. I think statistically most people who have extreme weight loss gain back their weight in 5 years. I did a search on your Triathlon finishing time and found none. I would what distance you are doing. I also went to your blog site http://benders-blog.blogspot.com/ and saw pictures of you. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there are pictures of you. For someone point fingers about keeping weight off you look at little more rounded that I would expect. Couple chins, more oval shaped than upside down triangle. I guess maybe you should take some Bicycle shorts pictures and post them for the world to see rather than judge others. Let see what the world thinks of your physique. Congrats on your weight loss

I am unimpressed that James B is unimpressed.

I do agree that it is 'harder' in some ways to keep weight off than to lose it; it's commendable to set one's mind on a goal and achieve it (give the fucker some credit, James!), but I would agree that it is truly impressive to take one's adult, set-in-his-ways self and anchor down a new life habit for keeps. I hope Adam will do just that and inspire others to do likewise, as perhaps you do, James. Or could if your 'meh' attitude wasn't kind of a turn off.

Andrew: I'm not saying it's a contest, and I have posted my story here, mostly to de-bunk some of the BS that was being put in the comments when Joel did this theme previously. Since I didn't whine about how special I feel for doing it, or talk about some deep emotional turmoil it helped me get over, or describe a quick and easy way to do it no one gave a rats ass. And that's just fine frankly, I did this for me. If I can help someone else great, if not, don't care.

My problem is that first of all, WE do this to ourselves and expect a pat on the back when we finally get around to fixing what WE screwed up when WE should have just not gotten fat in the first place! In my opinon it's a sad comment on our culture when we can fuck ourselves up, then be thought of as a hero for setting our lives straight whent the REAL accomplishment would be not fucking up in the first place! I didn't ask for any sympathy when I was fat, I don't give any to people who choose not to help themselves now. I can only care as much as they do, which I find is usually not at all.

Secondly, I'm tired of people here, on TV and other internet site with their half-assed, uneducated advice about how to lose weight. I've seen everything from completely pointless to outragiously expensive to down-right dangerous and it pisses me off! And the fact that this guy has had to lose weight TWICE tells me his system is broken and is just as bad as all the other bullshit I've seen.

Seth: I've kept it off for four years. The hard part isn't losing, it, it's keeping it off. Until Adam can do that I will continue to remain unimpressed.

As far as my triathelon time, I don't do this to win some race, I do it for me. Myabe that's his problem; once he reaches his "goal" he has no more motivation to keep it going. In any case, I am again unimpressed.

Hey, James:

Its no contest, and its totally not either-or. Please: post your story, and I'll be happy to devour it.

Here's the thing: losing weight isn't complicated. But its damn hard. And I think those of us who are early in the process need reminders its going to work.

I look at people who've dropped significant weight the same way I look at people who kick ass at their jobs, or who produce amazing creative works: these are people who took up a serious challenge, and overcame it. If I can be ridiculously over-earnest for a second, I think its really important to celebrate successes. Not in a your-okay-I'm-okay, hey you tied your shoes yourself kind of way, but to recognize results for effort expended.

Go Adam!

JamesB

Just because you were an entire person fatter then him to begin with doesn't make you extra-special, just extra-fatter - and you haven't had to do it twice *yet*.

Also - you didn't post your triathlon time.

Flame me all you want, but frankly I'm not impressed.

For one thing, I lost over 250 in a year, and I only had to do it once!

Secondly, with not resistance training, he may well have to do this a third time.

I love how people can make a mess of themselves, then become responsible all of a sudden and turn into a hero.

I say "meh."
