If you’ve got half an hour to kill, this documentary about Rodney Mullen, a man fundamental to the sport of skateboarding, is filled with just the right balance of reverence and detail. What I love about Mullen is that, despite pushing skateboarding in new directions for decades, developing dozens of tricks and new equipment designs, he comes off as just a normal guy who happens to really, really love to skate.

I didn’t watch this video (yet) but have seen many a Rodney Mullen video. I highly recommend the Rodney Mullen vs. Daewon Song video. These guys are some of the most amazing technical skaters we’ll ever see.

Rodney Mullen is easily one of my favorite and most inspirational Skateboarders, personally. Beyond the fact that he literally is the father of skateboarding, down to the fact that he is just an amazing person, whose genius is on a level beyond what anyone else out there works on. I think the documentary said it best, and it might be my favorite parts of the movie, “Who knows what really drives someone to progress; it could be fear, or competition, or being, basically, tormented by ideas…” If that doesn’t sum up Rodney Mullen, the Robot, the cleanest skater around, with one of the longest, most substantial careers as a professional, then I don’t know what does.

Mullen has been consistently amazing for longer than anyone else I can think of, plus he’s a super-nice human being along with it.

    Awesome stuff. Thanks, Joel!
