The Ionic Breeze and other similarly functioning air purifiers are at the center of a running controversy that has stemmed nearly since the discovery of air ions themselves.
In the words of Niels Jonassen of the Technical University of Denmark, ions…
…are not charged molecules or atoms. They are clusters of mostly water molecules (say 12–14) around an oxygen or nitrogen molecule that has lost an electron (i.e., a positive ion), or 8–10 water molecules around an oxygen molecule that has gained an extra electron (i.e., a negative ion).
In Jonassen’s article, “Are Ions Good for You?”, the question is posed as to whether or not there are any actual significant health benefits behind exposure to either negatively- or positively-charged ions. While he does not discuss at any length the ionic pair purifiers, he does repeatedly discuss the behavior of ions of either charge, and the multiple myths that have surround them since the early 20th century.
I can say that ionic hair dryers seem to work beautifully in my experience. One claim as to why is that the charged ions bond with the water molecules on the hair shaft and they are broken down into 1/50 their normal size; moisture is then easily absorbed by the hair shaft, making each one plumper and fuller, as well as locking in a smooth cuticle which results in greater shine and softness. On the other hand, Dr. CRAM, of CRAM Science cannot find a scientific substantiation for this claim.
I am not a proponent of ionic air purifiers, nor a detractor—I have no experience with them and thus cannot vouch or deny their credibility or qualitative effect. I’m hoping that some of you who do have ionic air cleaners will chime in with your feedback. Do you feel like your unit actually helps clear the air of pollutants? Does your air quality smell or even ‘feel’ fresher? Have any of your allergies been affected one way or the other since you began using it?

The Real Truth About The Ionic Breeze Is Quite Different!
The Ionic Breeze is quiet indeed. This is because the unit has no fan to exchange and filter the DIRTY air in the room through the machine in order to remove it from your indoor environment. The Ionic Breeze can only remove a very small amount of particles onto its thin-narrow collector plate that is attached to the unit. This collector plate can only attract particles from a distance of approximately 1/8 of an inch away! If the collector plate is dirty, the plate is not able to keep collecting particles onto it. Then its function ceases all together!
The dust, smoke, pollen, dander, Dust-Mite allergen and other allergens that are just a very short distance away from the collector plate will continue to float airborne for you to breathe!
Nor does the Ionic Breeze cause smoke and allergens to drop out of the air and away from your breathing environment!
The Ionic Breeze Air Purifiers Produce Ozone! Ozone can be an irritant and a real problem for people with Asthma & other Lung Diseases!
Smokers have complained over and over again that the Tar and Nicotine that does attach to the collector plate is very hard to remove!

I had an Ionic Breeze. I lived for a year in a 4-bedroom flat with 3 smokers, and it seemed to keep my small bedroom smelling fairly fresh. That could have just been the effect of the ozone, however.
It was anything but quiet. A lot of tar accumulated fairly quickly on the collector plates after cleaning them, and it wouldn’t take long before the unit would start making a zapping noise. It was cool to watch the little arcs at night, but sometimes it was like trying to fall asleep with a Jacob’s Ladder next to the bed.
One day the zaps stopped. So did the gentle ionic breeze and the ozone smell – it done blowed up. When I took it apart, I found the culprit: the micro switch that acts as a safety, only allowing the unit to turn on if the collector plates were firmly in place. Once I bypassed that switch, it chugged happily along for another couple years before it finally zapped its last zap and went to the curb.
