Build an LED Flashlight

Our goal at Dethroner with Electricity Week is to motivate those of you who are still on the fence with electronics-making to get over their fears and jump aboard the DIY train. So far this week you’ve learned how to solder, the tools you need (and then some), and how to make a simple circuit. Now it’s time to put this into practice. Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as you think; it never is.

If you are indeed new at DIY electronics, you’ll probably love my Mini LED Flashlight kit from The Electroids Co. The kit comes with parts and instructions to build your very own LED flashlight as discussed in the Circuits 101 - Power Flow entry. In about 5 minutes total, you can have something in your hands that you built yourself — something that works, and serves an actual function. Stop telling yourself that you don’t have the time, know-how, or energy to get started with building electronics. Everything you need to know is explained in simple terms, it takes as little as 5 minutes, and it’s really very simple.

Usually a beginner-oriented electronics kit has you ending up with a pinwheel that moves or something equally useless like an electronic beeping noise or some pithy blinking lights. Not this baby, I hunted down the most powerful LED bulbs I could get my hands on to make the flashlight you can build very, very bright.

The greatest thing about DIY electronics is the feeling of accomplishment, having something that you made and can show off to all your friends. It’s a kind of satisfaction that is hard to emulate shy of hunting down a wild boar and killing it with your bare hands.

The kit is only $8.50, and as you may know, every order from The Electroids Co. this week is an entry to win an iPod.
