dave_archer.jpgI’ve frittered away far too much time this morning on the website of Dave Archer, an artist who made his name by painting with a giant, Tesla-coil-driven “brush.” It’s a relatively dangerous way to make art, if the artist isn’t mindful of where his hands are—Archer has taken a million volts in the chest at least twice—but the end result is very unique. (It doesn’t look like Archer has done much work in the last decade. I hope the ease by which computers can generate similar effects with math hasn’t discouraged him; his work is far more romantic.)

Archer actually paints on glass, using the arcs of electricity to push the paint around. (And maybe even cook it a little? I don’t know). Archer doesn’t seem to do too much painting these days, but you’ve all almost certainly seen his work before: his back-of-glass paintings were used as set decorations on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
