Oh, Eurovision: DJ Bobo’s “Vampires Are Alive”
Published by Joel March 2nd, 2007 in Music, Tonic. Share ThisEurovision is a yearly song contest, sort of a proto-American Idol, which has mutated into some strange generator of discordant, embarrassing pop gems. (See: Lordi.)
Switzerland’s entry for 2007 is this amazing travesty called “Vampires Are Alive,” at its lyrical crux completely missing that vampires, by defintion, are not alive, and then spinning out from there in a shower of blood and synchronized dance.
Sample lyric: “I am a vampire. I’m a slave./I sleep through the daylight, hence my grave.” These guys make Celine Dion look like Celine Dio. Don’t watch at work unless your co-workers irony shields are way, way up. You might never live it down.

Godammit, DJ Bobo is a national disgrace.
Why are euros always trashing US culture as low-brow when Eurovision “plays some of the most terrible shit you’ve ever known” (bonus points for the lyrical reference).
I mean this is far too cheesy even for a trailer park…
Lordi’s performance was an order of magnitude more rocktastic than this tripe.
Truly an anthem for the vampire generation.
It freaks me out to realize that in two years DJ Bobo will have been doing this same song over and over for twenty years. It defies understanding to think of the creativity and guts required to come up with the lyrical mass of 14(!) albums of such deep and touching poetry, and accompany it with the never-changing dance formula and award-winning dance moves.
When I try to wrap my mind around these facts, for some weird reason my brain synapses start sending me images of the golf-obsessed Alice Cooper. Which is not entirely fair, given that you have to give *some* credit to Mr. Cooper for Poison.
You gotta give Alice credit for shameless, capitalistic diversity, as well. Only at his place: http://www.alicecooperstown.com/menu/index.htm can you get “DEVO’S BIG CITY SLIDERS”
According to Wikipedia, DJ Bobo wrote “Pirates of Dance” in 2005.
Butt Pirates of dance.
But seriously, this makes me happier than you can know. It reminds me of Army of Lovers.
*stakes Bobo through the heart*
i am british & have been a huge dj bobo fan for years,
pray - celebrate & together are my favourite’s but every time i listen to this it sends shivers down my spine,i think it is fantastic & should b a favourite to win eurovision.
baring in mind england has a global music empire with different groups/stars etc,i think dj bobo is excellent & beats them all hands down(wish i could see him live one day).
What a big fake. You are no damn vampire. If he was he’d prove it.
Ive been a eurovision fan since the early 70s and yes i loved Abba and Bucks Fizz. This is Fantastic this piece of music and should be given a fair chance….its about the melody not about sticking your teath into someones throat. Go Bobo Go. Im from the UK who will get Nil Pwah with our load of tripe.
oh christ you have to be kidding me Rod and Paul. You might as well admit your DJ Bobo yourself.
I think “Vampires Are Alive” is legendary! Finally a song that relates to us vampire/pyromaniacs!
