Sad as it is..I think this is a valid case for protective custody. Seriously, how can a parent sleep at night knowing their denial about the realities of their child’s health and their contribution to that end. I have to agree with the authorities that child abuse is not only physical violence or sexual abuse; but to also include the jeaopardization of the welfare of the child through their own neglect to his health crises. The situation is also validated through the mother’s own comments that if she didn’t give him his desired serving of food, then she would have to listen to the child nag all evening. OMG, nagging vs. the lifespan of your child. Do the math.

Not to excuse lack of parental responsibility, but I feel it is quite likely that the young man suffers from one of several developmental disorders that can cause severe and intractable over-eating. These children will steal food, eat things that aren’t food, and can be single-minded about food to the point of driving their parents crazy demanding it. What do you feel is the parent’s option should that be the case here?
