Horse Apples

This morning I called Susie “Horse Apple,” which she took to be a euphemism for shit, but is actually what we used to call the Osage orange when growing up. The moral: Always have a cover story. [Wikipedia]

In the famous words of Homer Simpson, “Doh!”

I’ve always heard the euphemism for shit as “road apples,” not “horse apples,” although I can certainly see the possible confusion. (On a side note, I’ve recently decided that the term “horse-shit” has a really nice ring to it and have substituted it in my speech for the overused “bullshit.”)

Isn’t there a line in The Shawshank Redemption when Red and the boys are collecting rocks for Andy and one of the guys picks up a peice of shit and Red says something like “That’s no rock, that’s a horse Apple.”?
