I use the Gillette Fusion Power Razor and its pretty great. I upgraded(?) from the Mach 3 last year. Although, the Mach 3 seems to give a closer shave..not sure why that is, maybe its just the feel. It takes a little getting used to the vibration while shaving with 5+1 blades but I've never had a cut. Also, I have the razor for over a year..I shave at least once every day and I've never had to change the one battery ever!

I use the razor with Nuetrogena's Shave Cream which I would highly recommend especially to guys that get in-grown hairs. I used Edge Shave gel before the switch and I would get in-grown hairs from time-to-time and my skin would dry out really bad without face lotion especially during the cold winter months. I don't need any face moisturizer since switching now. Good stuff!

More than anything, buy a badger-hair shaving brush and apply the shaving cream that way. Vulfix makes affordable ones, as I recall.

A Merkur is a good idea. It's also possible to find an old safety razor in an antique store and use that - I'm using a Gilette that's at least 50 years old - with new blades, of course. It, combined with the shave brush, works better than anything you'll get from an aerosol can and plastic-handled blade. I have the objective opinion of my wife on how my skin has improved to back that up.

I, too, moved to a Merkur safety razor a little over a year ago, and it gives me the best shave I've ever gotten from any of the multitude of razors I've used over the years. The initial sticker shock is a bit to overcome, but once you get over it and realize that you buy 10 replacement blades for $5 instead of 8 replacement cartridges for $19, you'll be thrilled.

Also, I found a shaving oil called The Total Shaving Solution (put it in Google and "feel lucky") has removed my previously standard irritation (if I'm smart enough to change my blade when it gets too dull) and made the shave even closer.

I highly suggest moving to a Merkur HD safety razor. I switched about a year and a half ago and will never go back to any of the multi-blade cartridge razors.
